Top Twelve Hawkworld Moments of the 2010s!

As we come to the close of the decade, it's time to look back on the past ten years and look at the best moments of the 2010s for Hawkworld. It was a turbulent decade, to say the least (when is it not?), but there is some comfort in the fact that we find Hawkman and Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman in a fairly good place as we head into the 20s. I looked back over the last ten years and made a list of the top twelve moments of the decade for the Hawks. I'll do a countdown, saving No. 1 for last.

Hawkworld History: Venditti's Journal from October 25, 2017

Robert Venditti shared a very interesting picture on his Instagram account! Back on October 25, 2017, he wrote in his journal the first time he thought of the idea of Hawkman to be reincarnating across both time and space! This is Hawkworld history! Venditti's Instagram link

Why wasn't Shayera Hol arrested?!

From Justice League No. 16 (March 2019)
After the events of Justice League No. 14-16, some fans have wondered why Shayera Hol, the current ruler of Thanagar Prime, was not arrested by the Green Lantern Corps and was allowed to continue her rule. In the Justice League issues, we were introduced to a Shayera Hol who had moved her people from the destroyed Thanagar to Thanagar Prime.

Twas the Night Before Christmas (Hawkman Version)

"'Twas the Night Before Christmas (Hawkman Version)"
By Clement Clarke Moore / Revised by Tim Board (@Hawkworld_)
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a Thanagarian Snare Mouse
The DC Classic figures lined up on the mantle with care
In hopes that Hawkman soon would be there

The children were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of Nth metal danced in their heads
And mamma in her gown, and I in my Hawkman logo cap
Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap

Board Review of Hawkman No. 19: "Tyrant Reborn: Better Half"

Ever since we found out back in October that Hawkwoman was coming to the Hawkman series, many Hawkfans have been looking forward to this one. Since the series began a year and a half ago, we have been wondering how Hawkman would finally meet Hawkwoman. And as Carter Hall says, "Not like this."

Explaining Hawkman, Hawkwoman, and Hawkgirl (December 1, 2019 Update)

Here is my December 1, 2019 attempt at explaining the current Carter Hall, Shayera Hol, and Kendra Saunders. The situation continues to change and we find out something more almost every issue. I've tried to piece everything that we have so far to see how the current Hawks are connected. Feel free to ask questions or debunk my theories in the comments below!

Sky Tyrant: The Evil Hawkman from Earth-3

Hawkman is going to be one of the six heroes who are "infected" by the Batman Who Laughs in a DC Comics event this fall. Here's the cover for Hawkman No. 18 (out on November 13th) by Tyler Kirkham introduces us to Sky Tyrant, the evil Hawkman of Earth-3. I'll revise this post as he makes other appearances!

Hawkman and Black Adam: Egyptian Connection

Art by Alex Ross
Back in March 2019, we received the surprising news that the upcoming Black Adam movie starring Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock will feature Hawkman, Stargirl, and Atom Smasher. That news was confirmed by The Rock himself during the end of August and again in November, saying the movie would start production in 2020, and that it would definitely feature Hawkman. The casting has not been announced yet, but it has been rumored that The Rock is looking for someone who is in his 30s and with the physique that can go toe-to-toe with Black Adam. Until they announce an actor for the part, it's all just rumors and speculation, but let's take a look at the interesting relationship these two DC Comics characters have with each other.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 18: "Tyrant Reborn: Dual"

Hawkman Vol. V No. 18 Cover by Tyler Kirkham
As DC Comics continues it's Year of the Villain theme, Hawkman's story of exploration and discovery could have been badly interrupted or thrown off course, but writer Robert Venditti seems to have done a masterful job of tying the infected Hawkman story into Hawkman's past. After seeing the Sky Tyrant finally take over at the end of the last issue, issue No. 18 starts off with the character's death on Earth-3. We all know some of the characters from Earth-3, a place where good and evil are reversed. In the past, we've seen Ultraman, Superwoman, Owlman, Power Ring, and Johnny Quick. For the first time, we are introduced to the Hawkman of that world, Sky Tyrant. There are spoilers ahead so if you haven't read the comic yet, don't read any further!

Ktar Deathbringer: Hero or Genocidal Murderer

In Hawkman Vol. V No. 7, released on December 12, 2018, Ktar Deathbringer appeared for the first time. According to writer Robert Venditti, he is the very first Hawkman, the Hawkman from which all other versions ever created came from. It is a shocking story about a murderous general who committed genocide with his army on planet after planet for many millennia. In this article, I want to take a look at the character and discuss why Venditti took the bold move of giving Hawkman such a dark, evil origin.

Hawkman 80th Celebration Fan Art!

Hawkman Day is coming up on November 10, 2019! We've chosen this day as Hawkman Day because Hawkman first appeared in the comics on November 10, 1939. Flash Comics No. 1's cover date is January 1940, but the comic was actually released on Nov. 10. Since we got the ball for the event rolling, Hawkfans have been sharing their art of the Winged Wonder. As the art is released, I'll be adding everyone's art to this post, so if you have some art to share, give me a shoutout on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram and I'll post it here, along with your name and the source. Click the name to go to the original source! Let's make Hawkman Day a day to celebrate one of the most iconic characters in comics!

Hawkman 80th Celebration: The Best Comic Book Series

Hawkman first appeared in the comics on November 10, 1939, in Flash Comics No. 1. Since then, Hawkman has been featured in eight regular series and several mini-series, back-up features and one-off issues. The Winged Wonder has been written and drawn by many of the greatest writers and artists in comics since the very beginning. Whenever I'm asked to come on a podcast or YouTube video, I'm always asked which series is my favorite. This question is always a tough one because it's impossible to choose just one. As comic book fans, we all have those issues that stay with us through the years. It can be for any reason; the writing, the art, or the characters. But when that special comic comes at a certain time in our lives, it stays with us and becomes a part of our own history. Comics have that kind of magic when it all comes together. As a Hawkfan, there are issues that stand out in my memory. There are series that I enjoyed more than others, and when I want to read my favorite hero again, I instinctively reach for those favorites. For this article, I've chosen the five series that have stayed with me and have remained my favorites over the years. In chronological order;

Hawkman 80th Anniversary Montage: "Across Time and Space"

During the past year or so, artist Nicola Scott has put out some beautiful covers of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Nightwing. The pictures show the history of the heroes from their first appearance to the most recent. To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Hawkman's first appearance in Flash Comics No. 1 on November 10, 1939, I decided to put together a montage of Hawkman art. I started on this picture a few months ago and it took a lot more time and effort than I expected. Since I'm not an artist, I decided to put together pictures from art by the many artists who have drawn Hawkman over the years. It was not easy. Not only did I have to look for a clean front shot of the characters, but I also had to find pictures that included the wings. I often found a great picture, only to have the wings cut off by the panels or word bubbles overlapping the art. I added the title "Across Time and Space" from the current Hawkman series by Robert Venditti. I'll list the name of the artists and add some comments below. Click the picture for a better look.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 17: Darkness Within: Black Mantle

Hawkman has been a hero who always seems to have a rage inside of him. We've seen stories where the rage came bursting out in full force. And when it's a character who carries around a spiked mace, the end result can be brutal. In the climax of the Shadow Thief story, we see it once again.

Shadow Thief: Villain of Darkness

Shadow Thief by Bill Sienkiewicz
---It seems like some kinda destiny that him (Hawkman) and I are gonna keep runnin' into one another.
---Shadow Thief
Lex Luthor. Joker. Cheetah. Professor Zoom. Black Manta. Sinestro. All of these villains are instantly recognizable to comic book fans as the main adversaries of the DC Comics' superheroes. They constantly, almost too frequently, show up in the comics of the heroes. DC Comics has deemed 2019 as the Year of the Villain, and for the main adversary to fight Hawkman, Shadow Thief was chosen. Many Hawkfans may have chosen Gentleman Ghost, Hath-Set, or Byth as Hawkman's main antagonist. But out of all the Hawk-villains, and there are many, Shadow Thief has the most appearances in the comics over the years. Shadow Thief, along with Gentleman Ghost, are probably the two most famous and popular Hawk-villains. Shadow Thief has made his presence felt in DC Comics over the years, so it can be said that he deserves the spotlight There have been a few versions of the Shadow Thief, but I'll focus on the most famous, original and current Shadow Thief, Carl Sands.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 16: "Darkness Within: Old Ghosts"

It’s DC Comics’ year of the villain, and Hawkman No. 16 brought us villains from every direction. We got Gentleman Ghost, arguably the most popular Hawk-villain in a flashback, a former villain-turned-ally in the Shade, Shadow Thief, arguably the most famous Hawk-villain all powered up, a giant shadow dragon, and the apparent arrival of the Earth-3 Hawkman Sky Tyrant. Wow, this book was fun!

The 80th Anniversary of Hawkman!

On November 10, 1939, Flash Comics No. 1 (cover date January 1940) was released. Hawkman, created by Gardner Fox, made his debut in the book and the iconic DC Comics hero celebrates his 80th birthday! The last 80 years have been a much bumpier ride for the Winged Wonder than for heroes like Superman, Batman, and The Flash, but the fact that he is still here and with an ongoing series is a testament to his appeal.
Join us in celebrating Hawkman's 80th Anniversary! If you have a website to post an article, a podcast, a YouTube channel, Hawkman art to share, please let us know on Facebook or Twitter and we will add the link to your site below! Gardner Fox Biography!

If you're a comic book fan, you know who Gardner Fox is. He's one of the most prolific writers in the history of comics. From the 30s until his death in 1986, it is said that he wrote over 4,000 comic book stories, including 1,500 stories for DC Comics. He is the creator of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, as well as the Flash, Doctor Fate, Zatanna, and Sandman. He also created the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, and then the Justice League of America two decades later. Amazingly, there has never been an official biography or book about one of the greatest writers in Comic book history, but we finally have one.
Being a Hawkman and Justice League fan, I was looking forward to reading the first biography of Gardner Fox, the man who created so many iconic heroes and superhero teams. As I read the book, it became clear that the history of Gardner Fox is the history of comics. Jennifer has gathered all the information available on Gardner Fox (no small feat!) and put it into an easy-to-follow course on not only the father of the Justice League but also on the history of comics itself. If you are a fan of comic books, this is one book you will want to read! Amazon Link

Board Review of Hawkman No. 15: "Darkness Within: Shades of Former Selves"

"An enemy unseen is an enemy seen everywhere." These words from Carter Hall's journal sets the stage for part two of Hawkman's battle with the Shadow Thief. After the attack by the new-and-improved Shadow Thief in the last issue, Hawkman realizes he can't fight his enemy alone, and in this issue, we get to see who he goes to for help.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 14: "Darkness Within: Shadowed"

What makes Hawkman interesting? I often get that question, and I have many answers. His image, his weapons, his relationship with Hawkgirl, his rogues’ gallery, his relationships with other heroes, and the list goes on. In the current series, we find an immensely interesting character by writer Robert Venditti. Venditti has recreated a character by giving him countless lives and memories that stretch across time and space, and the hero’s journey of exploration and discovery to find truth and atonement. It’s been a captivating series and issue No. 14 yet again brings up several things that make Hawkman one of the most diverse and deepest characters that DC Comics has to offer.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 13: "On Common Ground"

With the first year and the origin story of Hawkman completed, we wondered where writer Robert Venditti would take us for the standalone issue. After the big climax in the last issue, it's natural to assume that this issue would be a bit of a breather, but Rob stepped up and gave us one of the best issues in Hawkman's history. Some of the standalone issues from Hawkman Vol. 4 (2002-2006) are some of the best issues of the series, and this issue is right up there with those. Over the past year, Venditti has shown us what he can do when he can build up a story gradually, and now we see what he can do with one issue. This review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the comic yet, don’t spoil it. Go buy the comic, read it and then come back to read the review.

An Open Letter to Gardner Fox

Photo by courtesy of Terri Fox

Dear Gardner Fox,
On the occasion of your 108th birthday, I wanted to write an eloquent article, describing your amazing abilities and the work you left behind. After several rewrites, I finally gave up. I’m afraid I’m not eloquent enough to do a proper article to mark the occasion. So instead, I’m writing this letter to express what your work means to me. This I think I can do.

Fan Theory connecting the Current Hawkman and Shayera Hol to the Savage Hawkman

One of my favorite pastimes is to tie all of the continuities of Hawkman into one character. In the current Hawkman series, Robert Venditti has brilliantly put all of the past Hawkmen on one foundation. He has made an origin that explains all the Hawkmen and why Hawkman does what he does. It changes everything about Hawkman but also leaves everything that has happened in the past intact. However, a new challenge for fans came up when Shayera Hol and the Savage Hawkman showed up in Justice League No. 14-16 (February-March 2019).

Board Review of Hawkman No. 12: "Out of Many, One"

Caution: There are some spoilers ahead so read at your own peril or come back after you've read the issue!

When we set out on a journey of exploration and discovery with Hawkman twelve months ago, we wondered how the hero we know as Carter Hall would be changed. How will his story be written this time? What kind of hero will writer Robert Venditti and artist Bryan Hitch bring us? The answer turns out to be everything and nothing, both at the same time. The core of Hawkman remains unchanged. He is the superhero of flight. He is the superhero of the sky. He carries a mace. He is from Egypt. He is from Thanagar. Shiera is the love of his life. He is an archaeologist. He remains the hero we’ve always known.

Wanted: A Hawkman/Hawkwoman Comic!

Art by Stjepan Sejic (Hawkman) and Jim Lee (Hawkgirl)
Since last summer, Hawkman and Hawkgirl have been in some great comics. Hawkman has been in his own monthly series by Robert Venditti and Bryan Hitch. Hawkgirl has been a central figure in the bi-weekly Justice League series. Although the Hawkman series has been gradually dropping in sales (18k in March 2019), both series are getting great reviews. Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV are writing a new and interesting Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders, while Venditti has been reinventing the origin and character of Carter Hall.

About the artists taking on Hawkman after Bryan Hitch.

Covers for Hawkman Bryan (12), Will Conrad (13), Roger Robinson (14)
With Bryan Hitch leaving the Hawkman series after issue No. 12 (release date May 8th), there has been some speculation about the artists for the following issues. We've seen the solicitations for June and July. For issue No. 13, Will Conrad is doing the artwork. We were wondering if he was going to continue but the July solicitations show us that Pat Olliffe and Tom Palmer are doing the art for No. 14. So some fans were wondering if this was going to continue; a different artist for each issue. And that sometimes means the series is in trouble.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 11: "A Cast of Hawks"

By Tim Board

We all read comics books for different reasons. To experience the joy, the horror, the suspense, the exhilaration, the madness or the silliness. We pick up a comic book in expectation of how it will make us feel while reading it. We always have an opinion about it, whether it was good or bad. Some comics books surprise us, make us gasp in surprise, laugh out loud, and even get a bit emotional. When that happens, that comic book stays in our memory, making us smile when we remember back to when we first read it.

Will Conrad; New Hawkman Artist!

Will Conrad (Photo from Buffy Verse Wiki)
When the DC Comics solicitations for May 2019 came out last week, we found out that Bryan Hitch was leaving the series, and that Will Conrad would be doing the art for Hawkman No. 13. It's sad to see Bryan leave the series, as his work with writer Robert Venditti has been amazing for Hawkman. Their twelve issues together have become a turning point in the history of the Winged Warrior.
We still have two issues of Bryan Hitch's Hawkman to look forward to before Conrad takes over in June. But let's look ahead at the artist who will be doing Hawkman next. Here are some details:

My Love Affair with Bryan Hitch's Hawkman

We found out today that Bryan Hitch's run on the current Hawkman series will end with issue No. 12. I've known this for a while, but the official news made me reflect on the amazing run that Bryan has had with Hawkman. My love affair with Bryan's Hawkman began on December 29, 2017. That was the day Hawkman Found was released. I'll never forget it. I really didn't know what to expect but I was stunned. It was absolutely the most beautiful Hawkman comic I had ever seen. I had never seen the wings drawn that way and in such detail. The expressions of Carter Hall. Those Manhawks. The issue was a masterpiece and I couldn't get enough of it. I wanted more. And then about two and a half months later, my wish became reality.

Well, the lid just blew off in issue No. 10.

Movie Rumors: Hawkman said to be in the Black Adam movie, then movie with Hawkgirl!

Hawkman vs. Black Adam (Art by Doug Mahnke)
We received news from Charles Murphy on the ThatHashtagShow.com website that Hawkman is going to be in the Black Adam movie. Apparently writer Adam Szytkiel is wiring a script that includes Hawkman, Stargirl and the Atom Smasher. They are apparently looking for an actor who is between the ages of 30-39 and who has a physique that makes him look like he can go toe-to-toe with Black Adam. Production for the movie is scheduled to begin at the beginning of this year so stay tuned for more news. LINK
Also, Matthew Joseph at the WeGotThisCovered website reported that his has sources confirming that Warner Brothers is planning a Hawkman/Hawkgirl movie. No actors have been announced and there are no other details except that they are looking for a Muslim (???) actor to play the part. LINK
Let's keep our ears open for more news and let's also hope that Black Adam doesn't bomb. There was a Hawkman movie in the works back in 2011, but the Green Lantern movie (2011) killed all plans for that. Let's hope the plans will finally happen this time!
