Mind-blowing Gift from Robert Venditti!

A few months ago, when we were coming out of the shutdown from the Coronavirus and comics were starting up again, I had some trouble getting my comics in Japan. Hawkman No. 25 was especially hard to get and I was still having trouble finding a copy six months after its release. I put out a word on Twitter to see if anyone could help me find a copy. But then I received a couple of tweets from Robert Venditti, the writer of the Hawkman Vol. V series.

New Version of the Cover of Hawkman No. 29 by Mikel Janin

The cover of Hawkman No. 29 is truly a masterpiece and one of the best ever of Hawkman and Hawkwoman together. But I had a desire to see the picture "cleaned up" and see the two without the blood and ripped costumes. Not expecting anything, I tweeted that I would like to see it. Lo and behold, artist Mikel Janin responded and gave Hawkfans a truly beautiful version of a great cover. He also shared many more "unfinished" unfinished covers on Hawkworld Facebook! Many thanks to Mikel for his generosity and wonderful work on the recent series. We hope we get to see more Hawkman and Hawkwoman art by him in the future!

Comics Bookcase Fandom Files Reading List: Hawkman

The Comics Bookcase site gave Hawkman the spotlight on their website!
All throughout November, guest writers will be weighing in on fandom, specifically, guest writers who identify strongly with characters, teams, or franchises online. Each piece will feature a personal look at why a writer gravitates to a character, what keeps their interest, and — most importantly — a set of reading recommendations for folks looking to better understand that character.

Today, Tim Board of the Hawkworld Twitter account writes about his favorite character, Hawkman…

The "Dispute" about the First Appearance of Hawkman

We've celebrated Hawkman Day together since 2016, and it's grown quite a bit. It's been recognized on many sites, and even got a mention in Jennifer DeRoss' fantastic Gardner Fox biography. But is November 10th accurate?

Board Review of Hawkman No. 29: Final Justice Conclusion: In the End

“There is only one truth that I know to be certain…I was made to soar.”

The journey with Hawkman that began in June 2018 came to an end today. It’s a bittersweet feeling, because I feel disappointed that it has ended, but elated that it was better than it had any right to be. When the article in the Washington Post in March 2018 announced the upcoming new series by Robert Venditti, I had no idea what to expect. A couple months before the series started, I had the honor of “meeting” Robert in a podcast on The Comic Source. He talked about Hawkman being a story of exploration and discovery. And that is exactly what we got.

Hawkman Vol. V Tribute Collage 2020

Hawkman Vol. V kicked off in June 2018, and for two and a half years, Hawkfans were treated to one of the best series in the 81-year history of Hawkman and Hawkwoman. Sadly, the series has been canceled and will end with issue No. 29. The final issue will be released on November 10th, which just happens to be the 81st anniversary of Hawkman's first appearance in Flash Comics No. 1, released back in 1939. To celebrate a great series and the anniversary of two great characters, I've created a tribute collage to remember most of the great moments in the series. I started work on this back in April 2020, but after hearing about the cancellation, I sped it up and finally finished it. Under the collage is the list of all the artists who contributed to this great series. It's my way of saying thank you for giving us such a great book that the fans can enjoy for many years to come.
Note: If you want a pdf file of the collage, post your email in a comment or send me a private message on Twitter or Facebook.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 28: Final Justice Part Two: The Nth Degree

What do you do when you're not immortal anymore? Do you cherish each and every moment more? Do you suddenly become aware of the clock as your life heads to the inevitable finish? Or does the thought of your life ending paralyze you; not because you are afraid for yourself, but because you are afraid for the ones you love?

Aldis Hodge Cast as Hawkman!

September 25, 2020 will go down as a day to remember in Hawkworld history as the first actor to play the live-action Hawkman for the silver screen was announced. After many months of rumors and speculations, Aldis Hodge was confirmed by numerous sources and finally the actor himself to be the Winged Wonder for the upcoming Black Adam movie.  The announcement came as a surprise to many fans and there was an immediate interest in the topic and Hawkman was even trending on Twitter for a while, something that this Hawkman fan has never seen before.

Hawkgirl Ukiyo-e by Kota Nakatsubo

This is a ukiyo-e art piece by ukiyo-e artist Kota Nakatsubo. Ukiyo-e is a famous style of Japanese art which was popular during the 17th to 19th centuries. The use of hawks, clouds, feathers, and even the mace as the sun is beautifully creative.

There are three panels with writing on the right of the picture. The white panel says "é·¹" (taka、ou) which means hawk and "女" (onna, jo) which means woman.

The red panel is very interesting. It is a "yojij yukugo" (四字熟語) or in English, a four-letter compound idiom. A good example would be "isseki nichou" (一石二鳥) which means "one stone two birds."
In this ukiyo-e, the four letters in the red panel says "gi yuu nin kyou" (義勇任侠).
義 (gi) means justice or righteousness.
勇 (yuu) means bravery.
ä»» (nin) and ä¾  (kyou) together mean "unable to ignore the suffering of others."

Check out Kota Nakatsubo's Twitter and Art Station pages!

Board Review of Hawkman No. 27: Final Justice Part One: Seems Like Old Times

The long-awaited issue of Hawkman No. 27 has finally been released. Ever since the jaw-dropping cover by Mikel Janin was released back in June, Justice Society fans have been waiting for this one. With the announcement of the ending of the series coming in November, this issue took on a whole different look and meaning.
On the one hand, we had Hawkman and Hawkwoman joining up with the Justice Society in the 1940s. Flash (Jay Garrick), Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Sandman (Wesley Dodds), and Wildcat (Ted Grant) appeared as they battled the Injustice Society. It was pure comic book fun that many of us grew up on. This issue is a perfect example of why so many fans are hoping for Robert Venditti to take on a JSA book someday.

Hawkgirl Out of the Black Adam Movie

Art by Arthur Adams
Sad news. We got news from Dwayne Johnson The Rock himself that Hawkgirl has been dropped from the roster for the Black Adam movie. This is incredibly disappointing news as many fans were looking forward to seeing the Hawks together on the silver screen at last. It's not happening this time, but I hope we get to see Hawkman and Hawkwoman flying across the silver screen together someday. Preferably within my lifetime.

My Reason for #SaveHawkmanCampaign

Hi everybody. After Hawkman's cancellation was announced last week, I started up a petition to save the series and give everyone a place to join the group of comic fans who want to see the comic continue. Since then, I've had several people tell me that I'm wasting my time. If it was just up to DC Comics, then there might be a slight chance. But AT&T is control of everything. And they're in the process of cutting things left and right. They couldn't care less about Hawkman. That's business. Whatever. I have no power to change it.

Art by Gerardo Zaffino
But if we don't speak out about Hawkman now, when do we? I want to speak up now and let the higher-ups see that fans do care and want the comic to continue. Venditti has created an amazing world for Hawkman and Hawkwoman. We waited for this to happen for a long time. We've been blessed to have such a great series and I'm really thankful to have had it for 2+ years.
When they made the announcement, I debated whether I should do anything, but other fans encouraged me to go for it and this series is worth speaking up and fighting for.

Art by Mikel Janin
If you enjoyed the series, sign the petition as a way to show your appreciation to Robert Venditti, Bryan Hitch, and all the other amazing artists who had a hand in bringing us this great series. Stranger things have happened. If enough of us raise our voice and we buy the last three issues like there's no tomorrow, who knows?
So you can tell me my efforts are futile and a waste of time, but saving the comic is not the only reason I'm doing this petition. This is a way to send the creators a great big thank you and that we truly enjoyed their amazing talents and efforts to bring us a series that we will enjoy for years to come. Hawkfans will be talking about this series for decades. The creators left their mark on the history of comics and great characters. I wanted them to know that. That's what this petition is for. So if you enjoyed the series over the last 2 years, take a minute to sign the petition to say Thank you. And who knows? Miracles can happen.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 26: Hawks Eternal Conclusion: Death of a Thousand Hawks

The soaring journey of exploration and discovery across time and space with Hawkman and Hawkwoman has come to an end, and another has begun. What an amazing journey it has been so far. Starting from the islands of Greece, we saw ancient Egypt, the Feitheran's Dinosaur Island, the floating cities of Thanagar, Atom's Microverse, the Hawktastic Soarship, the destruction of Krypton, a battle for Earth over London, an endless war on Nebulen, the dark Shadowlands, the familiar Midway City, the gargantuan tomb of Titan Hawk, and finally the temple of the Lord of the Void on Qgga.

Hawkman Unleased Part Three: Soaring to New Heights

By Tim Board

Hawkman Unleashed Part One: The Reason and The Components of a Hero

On March 14, 2018, the new Hawkman series by Robert Venditti was announced. About a month after the announcement, I had the huge privilege of joining Rob and Jace Milam on The Comic Source podcast to talk about the upcoming series.
During the podcast, Jace said, "...ten, fifteen years from now when someone asks Tim which Hawkman run he should read and Tim says, "Read Venditti's run. That's where it's at."
We're two years into the run and I'm there. Rob's run on Hawkman has become the definitive run for comic book fans to find out about Hawkman. There have been many great series in the history of Hawkman and this does not take anything away from those fantastic stories. But Venditti's run has brought it all together, connected everything, and explained the great characters of Hawkman and Hawkwoman. This is the fifth series titled Hawkman and usually, it would be Vol. 5, but since the very beginning, I've been calling it Vol. V in honor of Venditti. For the third and final article, let's take a look at what Venditti has brought to the origin/purpose, secret identity, love, powers, weapons, locations, villains, supporting cast, and death/reincarnation of Hawkman.

Who will be cast as Hawkman in the Black Adam movie?

The Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock is still scheduled to be released in December 2021. Very little news and a whole lot of rumors have been flying around about the movie for years. As the production schedule gets closer, there is a lot of speculation about who will play Hawkman. Hawkman has never appeared on the big screen, so there is a lot of excitement among fans about who will be announced. Many fan sites have made their predictions about who is going to be the first to bring the Winged Wonder to the silver screen. Below are some of the predictions and links to the sites. Who do you want to be cast as Hawkman?

Hawkworld (Tim Board)
Hawkman: Alexander Skarsgard
My own personal choice for Hawkman has been Skarsgard for a few years now. He would be perfect casting in my opinion.

Hawkman Unleashed Part Two: Breaking Down Hawkman's History

By Tim Board

During Hawkman's 80-year history, he has had seven series, four mini-series, many special one-shot editions, and several runs in other comics. If we gave Hawkman comics a legacy count, we'll reach No. 250 in September 2020. (Check out the list here.) That's pretty low for a character that has been around that long. Hawkman seems to be a character that is impossible to ignore as a concept, but the concept has proved to be difficult to put onto the comic book pages for whatever reason. In Hawkman Unleashed Part One, I listed nine things that should be included in a Hawkman comic: origin/purpose, secret identity, love, powers, weapons, locations, villains, supporting cast, and death/reincarnation. In Hawkman Unleashed Part Two, let's take a look through the history of Hawkman comics and see how each series included the nine components.

Hawkman Unleashed Part One: The Reason and The Components of a Hero

By Tim Board
Hawkman 80th Anniversary Collage by Tim Board

In my mind, Hawkman is the greatest comic book character ever created. Now before all the Batman and Spider-man fans scoff, curse, and click away, let me explain why I think this way. We all love comics. We love how a certain character or story grabbed our attention, our interest, and finally our heart and never let go. For me, that character is Hawkman. For you, it might be Wonder Woman or Captain America. And that is perfectly fine. Somewhere, somehow, that character became rooted in your consciousness and stayed. Every time you see the image of that character, your heart immediately starts beating faster. You'll remember your favorite stories where the character lifted you up. Or you may even feel enraged, as you remember a story where you feel your hero was mistreated. But that's why comic books will never go away. These characters have become a part of our identity, and they keep us young until our dying day.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 25: Hawks Eternal Part Two: Taking Lives

At the end of the last issue, we were left with the phrase "The Power of a Thousand Lifetimes." My guess was that both Hawkman and Hawkwoman would call their former lives to the present in the way Hawkman did when he took down the Deathbringers to fight the Lord of the Void (LOTV). That's not what happened. We got a long-awaited reveal, a puzzling comment about a weapon, and the true meaning of the aforementioned phrase. Slight spoilers ahead!

Released June 16, 2020

Since Hawkman took off in June 2018, Robert Venditti has been rebuilding the character of Hawkman one step at a time. The steps have been in the form of Carter Hall's journal, the places he visits, the conversations he has had with the people he meets, and his past lives. At times he has taken very small steps, and at times he has taken giant strides.  Each step has revealed something about the man behind the Hawk helmet.

The List of Hawkworld Comics 1939-2020

I've put together a list of comics that Hawkman and Hawkwoman have appeared in since 1939. I have listed the regular series, mini-series, back-up features, one-shots, tie-ins, guest appearances and the issues from other characters' or teams' series that are important in their histories. I also added some notes that are important in their history. It's a work in progress, but maybe this will help Hawkman, Hawkwoman, and Hawkgirl fans navigate through the world of Hawkworld comics. Enjoy!

Note: Not all of the team issues are listed here. I tried to look back and list just the significant moments in the teams' (Justice Society, Justice League, All-Star Squadron) issues. If there are some moments that you think should be added, please comment below!

Update: I just added a separate page for the trade paperbacks, collections, omnibuses, etc. Go to the bottom of the page and click the tab!

Board Review of Hawkman No. 23: Miasma of Fear

It was a long wait, 55 days to be exact, but Hawkman No. 23 was finally released. We were left in suspense about the story about a "Plague Doctor" in the 17th century Europe coming out while the world is fighting a pandemic in real-time. It was uncanny, to say the least, but writer Robert Venditti had the idea for the story back in October. And it leads right into a moment we've been wanting for a long time.

Preview of Hawkman No. 23 (May 5 Release)

Note: Hawkman was originally scheduled to be released on April 8th. The new release date is May 5th.

Hawkman No. 23 has been raising eyebrows and getting some headlines like the following:

Comicon: Fighting Off The Plague In ‘Hawkman’ #23 Seems Rather Prescient

Preview of the first five pages on Graphic Policy

The issue is about a former life of Hawkman during the 17th century. He was a character called the Plague Doctor and he lived in Europe during the Black Plague. Here is the explanation of the issue from DC Comics'  April solicitations.
