Hawkman Review 2021: A Year of Cameos, Flashbacks, Teases, Deaths, and Waiting

The Year 2021 was a typical between-series year for Hawkman; cameos, flashbacks, unfulfilled teases, panel fillers, several deaths, and solicitations that delivered nothing. Hawkgirl had a bit more this year in the Justice League series, but Hawkwoman made only one appearance. Hawkman also made appearances in two DC animated films but both were massive disappointments. Below is a summary of all the appearances the Hawks made this year.

Hawkgirl Statue: New Addition to My Hawkworld Collection!

DC Direct 2002 Hawkgirl 9" Statue Maquette
Just added the Hawkgirl statue from the Justice League animated series that came out in 2002. It's a pretty nice porcelain statue. My only wish is that she was holding her mace, but it's still pretty nice! Found it on the Mercari site.

'Tis the Season to be Freezin': A Hawkman-Harley Quinn Story

'Tis the Season to be Freezin'
"A Change of Heart"
Script: Tara Roberts
Art: Eric Battle
Colors: Eva De La Cruz
Letters: Ferran Delgado
Editor: Katie Kubert

It's been exactly 10 months since we got a Hawkman story where he is not a cameo, flashback, or panel filler. They announced the issue in the September solicitations, but there has been very little talk about the issue since, and since Hawkman is not even listed on the contents page, most fans will probably miss this one. It's the sixth story of eight in the issue and told over ten pages, which is actually two more than we got back in February's "DC Love is a Battlefield."

Over the years, Alex Ross has given us some truly magnificent works of Hawkman. Although his work is out of my price range, I was fortunate to get a signed print of the cover of Justice No. 7. Here are the pieces that Ross has given us over the years. Here are the links to Alex Ross' websites: Official Website / Twitter / Facebook / Instagram

Collecting Hawkman Comics! What to do?!

It's been a year since the last Hawkman series ended! What's a Hawkfan to do when Comic Book Day has nothing to offer? The answer is Back Issues! Collecting all of the series, mini-series, one-shots, guest appearances, and backup features is always fun.

I keep track of everything I have with CLZ. It's a great site to keep track of what you have so check it out.

I often go to MyComicShop.com to look for what I'm missing. You can also tell them what you are looking for and they will email you when it comes in so it's pretty handy.

Savage Hawkman and Earth 2 Hawkgirl

Savage Hawkman by Joe Bennett and Earth 2 Hawkgirl by Nicola Scott. I thought I would try and put these two amazing characters together in one picture. They were active during the same time, but were never featured together. They were in the same story called The New 52 Future Eye but they were in different story lines. I wish they could have been in an adventure together. Another missed opportunity by DC Comics.

I don't often post stuff on YouTube, but I made a short video introducing my Hawkman collection in Japanese. Hawkman is not very well known in Japan, but that may all change after next year's Black Adam.

Discovering Nth Metal by Tim Board

Thoughts on the Nth Metal!

We've always heard about the Nth Metal and how it gives Hawkman the power to fly. But how fast? How does he control it? What other abilities does it give him? These sorts of questions are always bugging me so I've been digging around. Here is a list of all the abilities that Nth metal has shown over the years. I will continue to add to the list as other abilities show. When I add some new information and repost the article to the top of the blog.

Hawkman in the DC Animated Movie Universe

Hawkman has made some appearances in DC's animated movies over the years. He has never been the main character and his first appearance in 2009 remains his most prominent. Here is a list of the DC animated films that Hawkman has appeared in over the years. He has been given some lines in only two of the seven.

Also, Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman has sadly never appeared in any of DC's animated feature films to date.

"Leaving the Hawkman Toy Box Full"

Hawkman doesn't sell as well as some other comics. There's no denying that fact. There are several reasons for that of course. DC Comics barely promoted the recent Hawkman series after the first couple of issues. After starting with over 40k in sales, the lack of promotion, the uninspired Year-of-the-Villain event, the pandemic, and other things gradually pulled the series down to around 12k in sales and it was finally canceled after 29 issues. One of the reasons could be that many don't like the looks, background, or overall setup of Hawkman. There can be many reasons.
When a writer takes on Hawkman his job is to make Hawkman a relatable, exciting, attractive character. He can maybe give the character a new look, new powers, a new origin, a new base of operations, a new lover, new villains, etc. He can reach into that hero's past and change and "improve" him in a way that he thinks will make the character better than before. That's just common sense. That's what every writer wants to do. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Hawkman and Hawkwoman's Choice (Screen Rant Article)

Screen Rant is not my favorite site for comic book articles, but once in a while, they put out a good one. Here is an article by Wesley Smith that came out right after Hawkman No. 26 came out last year. It talks about the scene where Hawkman finally earns his redemption and is freed from the curse of reincarnation. It is a short but beautiful scene where we can see the love that Hawkman and Hawkwoman have for each other. Check out the issue and the article! LINK

The Basic Foundation of Hawkman

When I read an article, watch a YouTube video, or chat with someone about Hawkman, there is almost always the comment about how confusing he is. I don't dispute that, because there are different versions. There are the Golden Age Earth-2, Siver Age Earth-1, Hawkworld, Zero Crisis, Savage, and the current versions. They all have different origins and stories.

Carter Hall Figure

Carter Hall (Hawkman) FigureI took a figure of archaeologist Daniel Jackson of the Stargate series and added a HALL name tag and Hawkman logo. Michael Shanks played this character from 1997 to 2008, and Hawkman in the Smallville series so I thought it was perfect!

Hawkman Commission by Timothy Truman

Comic Art Fans (Timothy Truman)

A Guide through the History of Hawkman

DC Comics’ Hawkman is a character who has been around for over 80 years. During those 80 years, he has been rewritten, rebooted, and rebirthed. He has been given several different origins and names. He has been the victim of Crisis events, crossovers and tie-in stories. For the casual reader, it’s understandable that his continuity seems confusing, crazy and convoluted. After the Metal series in 2018, Robert Venditti was given the task of writing a new version of Hawkman. Venditti set out to give us a version with a new origin, but he figured out a way to include all the other past versions as well. Every Hawkman you have ever read can be included in his new origin. As a Hawkman fan and self-appointed guide, it’s my hope that comic book fans will pick up Venditti's series and discover what a fascinating hero Hawkman is. To help other fans understand the character as easily and as possible. I have made a chart to show where all of his past stories interact. To make it as simple as possible, I have divided all of the Hawkman versions into five categories:

New Justice Society Comic!

Art by Bryan Hitch

It was announced on May 25th that there may be a new Justice Society comic coming our way. Details are very sketchy. There was no release date announced. Apparently, Geoff Johns is the writer and Bryan Hitch is the artist. Hawkman appears to be in the lineup but there is no sign of Hawkwoman. More details are coming I assume. I'll add two links to the news below. Stay tuned and Wings crossed!

CBR: Stargirl Teases a Major DC Team's Return With an Arrowverse Threat
Multiversity Comics: DC Teases New “Stargirl” and “Justice Society” Titles
Bleeding Cool: DC Teases Justice Society Of America with Geoff Johns and Bryan Hitch
Comic Watch: Stargirl Spring Break Special #1: People and Things That Went Before

Interesting to see similar titles for the story.

Read Hawkman Comics and Discover the Hero!

Share this with your comic book groups if you can!
If you've never read Hawkman comics, give it a try. Not the team or crossover comics. Too many writers use Hawkman as a plot device, and they fail to go into his character, which is actually pretty fascinating. In his own series, you will find a character who is committed to justice, saving lives, finding the truth, and punishing evil.

Hawkman and Reincarnation

Stop killing Hawkman off in every story. It's no longer dramatic, surprising, emotional, or memorable. It's boring and it is proof that the writer has no idea how to write the character.

Hawkman and the Hostess Snacks Ads

Anyone remember those ads for Hostess Snacks in DC and other comics? They usually featured one of the heroes overcoming a villain or situation with one of the Hostess Snacks. It was silly but a lot of fun and many comics fans remember them fondly. I read somewhere that there was an agreement that the hero would never be seen actually eating the snack in the ads. Between 1975 and 1981, there were over 350 of these ads. Here are the three that Hawkman appeared in:

1966 Hawkman Club Official Member Badge

Back in 1966, Button World released a series of pins of the DC and Marvel Superheroes. Hawkman got his own badge as well. The pin is about 3cm wide and features the art of Murphy Anderson. The badge has become a collector's item over the years. You can see them sold anywhere from $10 to over $100.

A Guide to All the Versions of Hawkman

Whenever you read an article or watch a video about Hawkman, one of the first things they say about the character is that he's "confusing" or "convoluted." Granted, Hawkman has been through a few changes, and many of the crisis events or reboots that DC Comics loves so much have left him getting the short end of the stick. But if you have actually read Hawkman comics, you can put the basics together to see how the character got to where he is today. In this article, I will explain the story of each major character that had the name of Hawkman, where you can find them, and where they ended up.

The History of Hawkman and Hawkwoman by Tim Board

Here is the history of Hawkman and Hawkwoman/Hawkgirl explained as simply as possible. I've tried to include all of the major events, reboots, changes, and series that the Hawks have experienced since their first appearance in 1940. I've also made an attempt to explain the current Hawkman, Hawkwoman, and Hawkgirl as simply as possible. If you click the link, you can see the chart up close. I hope they help. If you notice something that is wrong or something you think I should include in the chart, feel free to leave it in the comments.

Flashcards of Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman's Historic Moments!

Hawkgirl first appeared as Shiera Sanders/Chay-ara in Flash Comics No. 1 which was published in November 1939. But she didn't strap on the wings until All-Star Comics No. 5 which came out on April 25, 1941. This month is the 80th anniversary of the first appearance of Hawkgirl, so I've made some flashcards of some of the historic moments from Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman's 80 years!

Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman 80th Anniversary Tribute Collage

Here is my collage to celebrate Hawkgirl's 80th anniversary. She first appeared as Shiera in Flash Comics No. 1 (November 1939), but she became Hawkgirl for the first time in All-Star Comics No. 5, published on April 25, 1941. I started making this collage during the summer of 2020, searching endlessly for pictures to use. As with the Hawkman collages, their wings always made it a challenge. After starting over numerous times, it gradually came together. I hope it is worthy of one of the greatest superheroines in comics. I've listed the artists whose work I used to create the collage down below.
