CBR: Best DC Superhero Friends (including Hawkman and the Atom and the Justice Society!)

Art by Bryan Hitch

CBR put out a list of "Best DC Superhero Friends" and a friendship that always makes these lists is Hawkman and Atom. These two have been close pals since 1963, when they first met in Atom #7. I wrote an article about the history of their friendship and why the two of them are so close. I hope this friendship will get some spotlight someday. CW's Legend of Tomorrow completely whiffed on that one.

CBR: The Year-of-the-Villain Tie-In Almost Ruined Venditti's Hawkman

Hawkman Vol. V No. 17 (December 2019)

CBR put out an article today about the ridiculous amount of tie-ins that come with events in recent comic events. Instead of helping the event, the tie-ins are mostly unnecessary and ruin other series. The article brings up as an example, Robert Venditti's Hawkman run in 2019. During 2019, DC Comics had a year-long event going on called the Year of the Villain. It started with a group of six heroes who turn evil. Hawkman was one of them. There was a 4-issue miniseries called Hell Arisen that was supposed to feature the six heroes, but it completely flopped and DC lost so much interest that Hawkman (Sky Tyrant) didn't even show up in the last two issues.

Gunn Shuts Down Hawkman Spin-Off Plans

A rather depressing article from a site called The Direct came out today. In an article titled "Black Adam 2: Did DC Cancel Dwayne Johnson's Sequel Plan?" (the answer is yes) by Nathan Johnson, we see the details of what Johnson had planned and also the tidbit again about some plans for a Hawkman spinoff.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl: A Hawkfan's Collection

Finally finished getting my Hawkman collection back up. Still have some stuff to get up, but I'll figure out where to put it some day. It's a joy to see this when I get up in the morning and when I come back home after a long day at work. A collection 46 year in the making and I'm not done yet!

15 Deadliest Justice League Members (Screen Rant)

Hawkman Vol. V #7 (February 2019)

"Heroes don't kill." This was the line that was repeated by Hawkman in the Black Adam movie. While it was noble and all, it really doesn't fit Hawkman. Since his reincarnation began, Hawkman's mission has been to save lives, but as comic book readers have seen in the comics, there have been many times when Hawkman had no qualms about killing the enemy to save other lives. His iconic mace is pretty much proof of that. Hawkman is already ranked pretty high in this Screen Rant article, but if you add in the lives he took before he broke free of the Lord of the Void's control and entered into the reincarnation cycle with Hawkwoman, he would be a solid No. 1. Check out the article by Justin Epps and see if you agree with the rankings.

Positive Fan Reviews of Black Adam

Most of the "critics" and some spoiled produce site has bashed the movie since it came out in October 2022. But for many DC Comics fans, the movie did have some positive things that promised a lot that hopefully Warner Bros will deliver one day.  The movie did have its problems, of course. It wasn't the perfect superhero movie, not by a long shot. But some fans remain upbeat about it. I gathered some comments together from the members and followers of Hawkworld on Facebook and Twitter. If you haven't seen the movie yet, maybe some positive views about the movie will encourage you to go see it. Personally, Black Adam gave us our first live active movie version of Hawkman, so it will always have a special place.

Fan Comments are below! Post your positive comment and I'll add it!

Hawkman in Black Adam: 5 Top Powers of the DC Superhero

SK Pop's Adrita Roy Chowdhury put out an article today on Hawkman's Top Five Powers that we see in the Black Adam movie! The list was pretty spot on and covers Hawkman pretty well. The top five are as follows:

DC Movies Ranked Worst to Best (24SSports)

It's not often that we get a fairly positive review of Black Adam, but this writer for 24SSports had Black Adam ranked higher than I expected, so I was pleasantly surprised. No, Black Adam is not a perfect movie. It definitely had its problems and could have done without some things (Heroes don't kill, Skateboard kid, Snacks, etc.) but it did introduce a lot of new things to the DCU; Hawkman, the Justice Society, Nth metal ship, Hawkman's estate, potential for Isis and Hawkgirl, etc. Not to mention the first ever silver screen version of Hawkman. Finally. Personally, I would love to have a copy of the movie that cuts out the skateboard kid and the needlessly long prison breakout scene. But in my humble opinion, it's not as bad as many make it out to be. Yes, it came up short of $400 million worldwide. WB did very little marketing for it. China banned it. There was absolutely nothing where I live in Japan. Not even in the theater where the movie was being shown. Whatever the reasons, Warner Bros. failed this film. Setting all that aside, there are fans who enjoyed the film and the writer of the article appears to be one of them. He gave Black Adam a pretty high ranking among the DC films. Here are the films in alphabetical order.

Every Fictional Location in the DCEU Map (So Far) (MovieWeb)

Link to source of map

With the Black Adam movie, Hawkman and Hawkgirl's homebase is now on the DCEU (soon to be DCU I suppose) map. St. Roch was Hawkman's city during the Vol. 4 and Hawkgirl series (2002-2007) and  the Black Adam movie brought it back in a big way. The soon-to-be-defunct DCEU has made St. Roch a rather important city, so it could be used in the DCU again in some way. It's been established (for now) that Hawkman has a huge estate outside the city limits, and the estate also serves as the headquarters for the Justice Society. This never happened in the movies but since when do movie writers worry about what's in the comics, right? Amanda Waller and her Belle Reve Penitentiary are located near St. Roch as well, which means the Suicide Squad is also there.

One Fan's Hawkman/Hawkgirl Collection (Updated!)

One of the most enjoyable things about being a comic book fan is collecting things of your favorite characters. I've seen some absolutely amazing collections that fans have shared on social media over the years. And one of the joys of being a Hawkman fan is slowly adding to my own collection of Hawkman and Hawkgirl comics, figures, and other things. Until earlier this year, I had my collection all set up, but my kids are getting bigger, and we need the space, so I gave my room for one of my kids and took most of my collection, and stored them in boxes. I figured I'll get to put it up again someday. In the meantime, I'll keep adding one piece at a time to my collection.

13 Things Most Comic Book Fans Don't Know about Hawkman (But You Probably Do!)

In 2017, when the Metal series was happening, Dan Greenfield of the 13th Dimension website asked me to write a list of 13 things that many comic book readers may not know about Hawkman. If you soar into Hawkman's history, you will be surprised what a diverse and interesting character he is. There is certainly no lack of information for this list, and it was hard to limit myself to only 13 things.

The Hawkman Family (Updated 6-16-2023)

Here is a quick introduction to all the members of the Hawkman Family that we have seen over the years. In the Hawks' long history, many characters have been added to their family.

New Zero Hour Hawkman Figure?

Hawkworld Facebook's Mikel Garcia posted a notice from McFarlane today. Apparently, they are coming out with a Zero Hour Hawkman figure in a few months. This is the only news that we have of the figure, so more details might be coming soon. We had one figure of the post Zero Hour Hawkman from Kenner that was released i 1996 (below) but it will be interesting to see what McFarlane comes up with this time. Stay tuned!

Ten Best Underrated DC Comics of the 2000s (CBR)

Back in 2006, a new Hawkgirl series picked up where Hawkman Vol. 4 left off, starting at issue No. 50 and continuing for 17 issues. Walter Simonson wrote all 17 issues, and the art was shared by Howard Chaykin (7 issues), Renato Arlem (7 issues), Joe Bennett (2 issues), and Dennis Calero (1 issue).
The series picked up after the Infinite Crisis event. Hawkman had decided to stay on Thanagar to help rebuild, so Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders went back to St. Roch to run the Stonechat Museum until Carter Hall returned. Hawkman eventually returned and the ending seemingly resolved the Shiera/Kendra conundrum, until the Blackest Night event brought it right back.

Fan Art of the Week!

Styvens Jangal

Over the years, many fans of Hawkman and Hawkgirl have shared their art with me and the Hawkworld social groups. A few days ago, one of Hawkworld's followers on Twitter asked me to feature his art. I thought that would be a cool idea to do once a week. So I'm taking Zachary Hering's suggestion and starting a spotlight on fan art every week on Monday!
The art above was post on Hawkworld Facebook back in 2016. I think it's the only piece anyone has ever done of me with Hawkman so the art by Styvens Jangal has always stayed in my memory.
   Check out Hawkworld on Mondays!

10 DC Comics Powers That Doomed Their Users (CBR)

Hawkman shows up on this list with his "power" of reincarnation. I've never really thought of Hawkman's reincarnation as an actual power. It's more of a curse, but it does give Hawkman the ability to continue through time. Reincarnation has made him practically one of the immortals. He even showed up at a meeting of the Immortals in the Dark Night Metal event back in 2017.

5th Year Anniversary of Hawkman Vol. V

House Ad for Hawkman Vol. V (June 2018)

Time flies as fast as Hawkman! The first issue of Hawkman Vol. V by Robert Venditti was released on June 13, 2018, 5 years ago today! The most recent Hawkman series continued for 29 issues, ending on November 10, 2020. In the series, it gave us a new origin for Hawkman, introduced us to numerous former lives of Hawkman, such as Catar-Ol of Krypton and Katarthul of Rann, and brought Hawkman and Hawkwoman truly back together for the first time since the Brightest Days series in 2010. The art by Bryan Hitch, Pat Olliffe, Fernando Pasarin and others made it one of the best Hawkman series ever. Since it's conclusion, it has often popped up on comic book reviewers' lists of the best series in recent DC Comics history.

Ten Best DC Heroes with Confusing Origins (CBR)

"Confusing" is pretty much synonymous with Hawkman. If you read an article about Hawkman, confusing is usually in the very first sentence. As a Hawkman fan, it gets monotonous and boring to continue to see it, but for the comic book fan who hasn't really read much Hawkman or gone into his history, I suppose it can't be helped.
CBR gave us a whole article about confusing characters, and of course, Hawkman is in there. I found myself actually pleased that Hawkman wasn't listed at No. 1, although I sometimes get the impression the CBR rankings are done randomly or by popularity.
The article mentions Robert Venditti's origin, which I would recommend everyone read, which brings a great center to bring Hawkman's history together. The rest of the article was also light reading but a lot of fun to read/ Check it out! LINK

Hawkgirl Logo History

When DC Comics announced a new Hawkgirl series in March 2023, we soon got a look at the new logo for the 6-issue miniseries. The logo by Amancay Naheulpan was definitely different from anything Hawkgirl has had before. Until now, her logos were basically versions of Hawkman's logos, but this is something uniquely her own. It's also a clever use of her Nth Metal mace. Fan reaction seems to be pretty positive, and it will definitely claim its place in the history of Hawkgirl logos.

I was curious how many Hawkgirl there have been in the past so I collected all the ones that I've saved over the years. If there is one that I've missed, feel free to let me know in the comments and I'll check it out!

DC: Best Flash Allies (Game Rant)

Jeremy Brown put out an article today about Flash's best allies, teams, and friends. I wondered if Hawkman would show up in the article. He did, but it was in the section on the Justice Society. That makes perfect sense since Hawkman and the Flash debuted together in Flash Comics #1 back in 1939 and have been soaring/running together ever since. Brown's article reminded me of two (of many) Hawkman-Flash scenes in the comics. Both came in unexpected ways, so maybe that's why they continue to stick out in my mind.

Ten DC Heroes Who Created Their Own Worst Enemies (CBR)

Today's article brought to you by CBR includes Hawkman and Hath-Set. To be honest, when I saw the title, I thought that Hawkman and Hawkgirl would be on the list with the Gentleman Ghost. GG was hanged by Nighthawk (a former life of Hawkman) back in the 19th century and became stuck in a ghost-like state until the Hawks' reincarnation cycle is finished. For me, this one would fit the article better, but I suppose Hath-Set is the original Hawkman villain and therefore the more obvious choice.

Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Hawkwoman Costumes Through the Years

A couple of years ago, I used the art from the DC Microheroes site and made a chart of all the looks that the Hawkman have had over the years. Just by looking at a costume, I think most comic book fans can tell what era it is from. Which is your favorite look for Hawkman and Hawkgirl?

Nth Metal's Control of Gravity

We all know about the anti-gravity powers that Nth Metal gives the wearer. It's been revealed that the Nth metal is psycho-receptive and can control all the fundamental forces of the universe. I've mentioned this is posts and tweets before, but I have often wondered in the past if Nth metal could also increase the weight of something. Imagine the powers that would give Hawkman. We've seen them lift things like cars or airplanes with the Nth Metal, but what if they could make them super-heavy?

In Superman Batman Public Enemies, we saw a fight between Superman and Hawkman. Hawkman used his Claw of Horus and Superman was "hit with the core of the planet." This means Hawkman was able to...

New Hawkgirl Series Coming in July

It has been announced that a new 6-issue miniseries of Hawkgirl will start on July 18. Ever since the Dawn of DC chart came out last year, fans had been wondering what was coming, and it was finally announced a couple of months ago. The writer will be Jadzia Axelrod and the art will be done by Amancay Nahuelpan. Here is the intro that we got for the first issue:

Hawkman, the Pulp Comic Hero

CBR's Ashley Land put out a ranking of the top pulp comic heroes, and Hawkman showed up on the list. It's not too surprising, since Hawkman is a good example of how something was created from pulp fiction. LINK

CBR Article: 10 Best Supernatural DC Heroes

CBR's Ashley Land put out an article today on the 10 best supernatural heroes from DC. It's the usual light reading and very debatable, but guess what number Hawkman comes in at! LINK

Hawkman's books walk a line between adventure, science fiction and the mystical. His main supernatural element stems from his power of reincarnation, with the hero having lived dozens of lives across time and space. His unending existence is credited to a godlike entity who gave him his ability. cont.

The Daily Rios Digest's Review of Wednesday Comics' 2009 Hawkman Feature

Back in 2009, DC Comics put out a weekly anthology book called Wednesday Comics. It featured 15 stories, one page a week for 12 weeks, and each story was done by a different writer. Kyle Baker put out a pretty good Hawkman story. To be honest, the first page was the best of the story, but it's worth a read if you can ever get your hands on a copy.
A comics podcast called The Daily Rios reviewed the story in an episode last month. It's a good review that had me remembering my own similar reactions when I read it for the first time. Go check out the podcast! LINK

Hawk Cosplay Alert: Grace McClung

Cosplayers are the best fans in the world. Their creativity comes from the heart. It may not be the best, but you can tell that they love what they are doing. You can also find more amazing Hawkgirl cosplays here. Respect!

Thought for the Day: A Knowledgeable Editor Base is Vital

Been seeing a lot of comic book review sites and articles lately that talk about how bad the editing system is in DC Comics. It's almost like they have no editors, editors who know nothing about the characters, or editors who really don't care. A central editor for everyone to stay in touch with is vital for a system like DC Comics.
And DC Comics seems like they are ignoring one of their most vital, knowledgeable, and passionate resources; the fans.
Thought for the day.

Give JSA Another Shot! (Article by We Got This Covered)

Charlotte Simmons of the We Got This Covered site put out a word for the JSA, particularly Hawkman and Doctor Fate, asking James Gunn and the new DCU to give the characters another shot in another movie. Simmons was a bit hard on Black Adam IMHO, but it's nice to see the article and all the positive comments that Hawkman received. Check out the article! I hope it becomes a reality someday.
