The year 2017
was an odd year for Hawkman and Hawkgirl. The year started with both in their
own soon-to-end series and the year would end with both being involved in a
Batman-project with hope that it would lead to their own series in the near
future.

A Hawkman-Hawkgirl Collage (1940-2017)
About two years ago, I thought I would put together a few of my favorite Hawkman pictures from the comics. The first collage I made had 35 pictures, but then I thought to do one with a picture from every year since 1940. After that, I thought I should do one for Hawkgirl. Then I thought I could combine them. The result was a 154-pic collage of the history of the Hawks that took over a year to put together. Now, how about a 500-pic collage next?

Scott Snyder's Syfy Wire Interview Quotes
Some promising comments were made by Scott Snyder during his interview with Syfy Wire!

Lady Blackhawk and the Dragon of Barbatos (Metal No. 4) |
Quotes from Scott Snyder:
"Thanagar Prime, which is a story element that's going to be picked up after Metal, as well."
"They've always been central to the DNA of the story and plot-wise it's been about Batman picking up on a mystery that the two of them have been a part of for generations. This is the part that their emotional conflict, their mythology, their mission, relationship with each other, their love comes to the front of the story. Everything becomes jeopardized and they become very prominent figures from here on out. What happens to them plays out in stories after Metal too. So it's great to move them to center stage and moving them forward."
"I love writing Hawkman. I love writing Carter Hall. I love the fact that he's this detective of history. He's this hero that's sort of reincarnated over and over and over. And has this mantle I think, and this burden of knowing so much about human progress, human failings. He's been around since the very beginning of humanity and so he's seen the scope of our greatest ambitions and our biggest failures. He's also connected to these wild alien elements and so there's almost this great secret history to him and his character."

Hawkman's Ultimate Weapon: The Claw of Horus
By Tim Board
Throughout his history, one of Hawkman's trademarks has been his weapons, From the beginning he has used all sorts of weapons to defeat his enemies; from his ever present mace to his Katar from Hawkworld. However, in 2001, David Goyer and Geoff Johns created a weapon for Hawkman that would be his most powerful weapon ever; the Claw of Horus.2017-12-15

Smallville Hawkman vs. Arrowverse Hawkman: Which Was Better?
CBR.com put out an article comparing the Smallville and Arrowverse versions of the DC superheroes. Hawkman made No. 6 on the list and they chose the Smallville version played by Michael Shanks as the better Hawkman. Smaville's Hawkman only appeared in four episodes, while Falk Hentschel's Hawkman appeared in nine episodes (seven Legends, one Arrow, one, Flash).
I'll have to agree with CBR's decision. The storyline, the writing, the costume were all much better than Arrowverse did. In my personal opinion, the writing and the way the show used Hawkman was an insult and left me wishing they had never used Hawkman in their horrid show. Hawkgirl wasn't much better as they had her useless unless she had a man to cling to. Because of their costumes, the Hawks are going to be hard to pull off but hopefully, someday they will receive the proper treatment from writers who know what they are doing.
Falk Hentschel as Hawkman and Ciara Renee as Hawkgirl did a great job with what they were given. I wouldn't mind these two showing up as the Hawks together again someday, as long as the writers of Arrowverse are nowhere near the project.

How a Boy Fell in Awe with Hawkman
It's the end of the day, middle of the night actually, I can't sleep so here I am. You know how you lie awake at night, thinking about the past, remembering things sort of vaguely, when one moment kind of latches on and you start remembering details you forgot about. What is this about? It's about Hawkman, of course!

A 'Hawk'-eyed Easter Egg: Does Hawkman Appear In 'Justice League'?
Personally, I think this is grasping at straws, but this has been brought up so many times on numerous sites, so it's worth checking out at least. Some fans are saying that it appears that there are what "may be", " but we're not real sure", but "it just might be" Thanagarians flying way, way, waaaaaayyy in the back of a battle scene in the Justice League movie.
"In the above shot, we see an Amazonian leaping into action, while just to the left of their head you can see a little flash of white wings. So what, big deal, and who even are the Thanagarians? Well, when you consider that some of the most famous members of the species include Hawkman and Hawkgirl, this could mean big news for the ranks of the Justice League. While the picture may look like nothing..."So there is is. Check out the Link HERE on the GEEKs site and see the GIF for yourself? What do you think?
"Clearly Justice League will set up the plans for a larger team and a roster that could include Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Hawkman. While Hawkman is one of #DC's lesser-known heroes and the studio clearly expanding their film slate, never say never to a Hawkman solo-film. If not, a winged wonder would still make a great addition to any of DC's upcoming #superhero films."

A Hawkman Fan's Review of Justice League 2017
After months of trailers, news, reviews (mostly negative), and trying unsuccessfully to avoid all spoilers, I finally was able to watch Justice League on November 23rd, opening day in Japan. Here is my review and feelings about the film and the whole experience. This article is SPOILER RICH, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, stop reading!
DC Comics is hardly ever seen in the area where I live in Japan. I have never seen a comic book displayed in a bookstore, the nearest Toys’R’Us store with slim DC hero selections is a two-hour drive away, and Marvel has totally outdone DC in almost every area in Japan. So, it was quite a thrill walking into the theater, seeing the Justice League displays, and seeing all the DC merchandise behind the counter and for the first time ever in Japan, seeing a DC book with Hawkman on the cover. This definitely got my adrenaline flowing.

Desire for a Comic Book
In this day and age
Of superheroes taking the stage

Seeing our heroes in a brawl
Fighting to save us
From a villain so monstrous
Seeing our heroes in a brawl

From a villain so monstrous
But don't think we need
Nor will we stampede
To blockbusters and a trilogy
For us to experience an epiphany
Nor will we stampede

For us to experience an epiphany
It may seem so great and fine
To see our heroes shine
But we find ourselves with a dream
However ironic it may seem

Not on screen or Internet
That's not where we met
Of our heroes we got our first look
On the pages of a comic book

It would give the greatest smile

Hawkman Learns the Language of the Birds (Flash Comics No. 23)
One of my favorite stories from the Golden Age is Flash Comics No. 23 by Gardner Fox and Sheldon Moldoff. In this issue, Hawkman is rescued by an old hawk named One Eye. The hawk takes Hawkman to the "secret nesting place of the hawks", and while recuperating, he learns the language of the birds. During the final battle, One Eye sacrifices himself to save Hawkman. At the end of the story, the hawks elect Hawkman as their new "chieftain".
It amazes me how much story Gardner Fox could tell in just nine pages!

Metal 101: Reviewing How DARK NIGHTS: METAL Fits In The DCU Timeline
Catching up on where we are in the Metal event. Lots of Hawk references! Article Link
Sometime in the mid-20th Century, Hawkman and Hawkgirl were so obsessed by the strange Nth Metal and the stories they've been told that they formed a team of scientists and adventurers to study it all. Included in the group was the Blackhawks, the Challengers of the Unknown, Red Tornado, and the Metal Men.Hawkman operated from Blackhawk Island, a place in a hidden pocket from space-time. It took him decades to build the technology needed, but he and his friends eventually were ready to send a team to the "other side" by utilizing Nth Metal.
How A Hawkman Villain Might Be the Key to Dark Nights: Metal
Very little has been teased about the future of Hawkman, but from the few details we have, it’s possible that the version of the character that Geoff Johns established over a decade ago is coming back. The Hawkman on the cover of Hawkman Found looks like Johns’ Hawkman. Kendra Saunders has returned. And now Onimar Synn is back.We don’t know where or when the answers to Metal, the Dark Multiverse, or Hawkman will all be answered, but the reappearance of Onimar Synn could play a major role in connecting everything.Article Link

Hawkman Movie Scenario by Tim Board
With the Justice League movie coming out this week, I am reminded of the movie scenario I came up with for Hawkman (Carter Hall and Katar Hol), Hawkgirl (Shiera Saunders) and Hawkwoman (Shayera Thal). Let me know what you think.

Terri Fox Shares a Childhood Memory of Her Grandfather, Gardner Fox
One of our members of Hawkworld is Terri Fox, the granddaughter of Gardner Fox, the creator of Hawkman. She shared a childhood memory with the group today. She gave me permission to share it with everyone and since today is the anniversary of Hawkman's debut 78 years ago, here it is!
Hi. I just wanted to share a story about Gardner Fox, if you don’t mind. He was my grandfather. When I was 9 years old he came to Grandparents Day at school. He went to law school but found the practice unfulfilling. He told my class that he watched a bird 🦅 di dive and snatch something from the ground- and he thought that’s what Justice should look like. Hawkman was published just six months before my father was born.

Hawkman: Still Flying After Seventy-Eight Years
Hawkman: Still Flying After Seventy-Eight Years
By Tim Board
Revelation often comes with a thunderclap, and forces one to take notice. Sometimes it comes quietly, during a quiet afternoon, with a casual view out the window, a small bird, and a tiny twig. Whether it starts with a loud shout or a quiet flutter, a revelation can become something that grabs hold and never lets go. Starting with Gardner Fox’s inspiration in the late 1930s, a character quietly came into existence and even after seventy-eight years, with the amazing creativity and talents of many writers and artists, it still thrives to this day.

DARK NIGHTS: METAL #3 REVIEW
Dark Nights: Metal No, 3 Review
by Kevin Lainez of Comic Book Revolution
"What still could be the wild card in all of this is Hawkman and Hawkwoman’s role in the story. Though Kendra ended up being pushed to the background for most of Dark Nights: Metal #3 she still made her presence known. Snyder is doing a good job in having Kendra try to assert her authority by reminding everyone that she has lived many lives and has the most experience. This turn makes her come off as an important part to what the Justice League are doing, while also keeping whatever Hawkman is up to hovering over the story."

13 Colorful — and Often Weird — HAWKMAN Designs
Hawkman is one of the most iconic characters in all of comics: The wings, feathered helmet, harness, mace and bare chest make him a figure that’s hard to forget. Several years after the Golden Age ended, DC Comics decided to bring back the Flash, Green Lantern and heroes like Hawkman, giving rise to the Silver Age. Those first two received very different looks from their Golden Age counterparts, but Hawkman remained mostly unchanged. Since then, however, the Winged Avenger has had many different costumes. Let’s take a look at some of them: Article Link

DARK NIGHTS: METAL #2 REVIEW
Dark Nights: Metal No. 2 Review
by Kevin Lainez of Comic Book Revolution
"As much as Dark Nights: Metal #2 was about the search for Batman, Snyder did a nice job continuing to build on Hawkman and Hawkwoman’s role in the story. Seeing Kendra interact with the other Immortals of the DC Universe was a good way to re-introduce the Legion of Doom. ...This scene with the Immortals also help build on the mystery of whatever Hawkman is doing with the Challengers of the Unknown. It’s clear with how Kendra mentioned that she destroyed Prince Khufu’s tomb a long time ago that there is more that she and Carter aren’t telling anyone. What that is exactly will make the moment that Hawkman re-appears even more important to the outcome of Dark Nights: Metal."

Many other DC Comics characters will appear in the show, including Adam Strange and Hawkwoman. Geoff Johns confirmed the classic characters' presence in the new show during the Krypton panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Adam Strange is an archeologist who was teleported to the planet Rann via the Zeta-Beam. Hawkwoman has had many different iterations over the years, including Shayera Hol and Sharon Parker. Shayera Hol was a Thanagarian warrior reincarnated throughout the ages alongside her Hawkman counterpart Katar Hol. Given that Strange is a representative of Rann while Hawkwoman hails from Thanagar, Krypton could reference the Rann-Thanagar War, as portrayed in the Infinite Crisis event.

DARK NIGHTS: METAL #1 REVIEW
Dark Nights: Metal No. 1 Review
by Kevin Lainez of Comic Book Revolution
"Hawkman not being in Dark Nights: Metal #1 also makes the character come off as a much greater legend."
"Dark Nights: Metal #1 also does a great job in building up Hawkman and Hawkwoman as intriguing characters. As important as the characters are to DC’s history both Hawkman and Hawkwoman have had a tough time gaining a big following. A lot of that has to do with the fact that the Hawk’s have incredibly complicated histories that makes them hard to grasp."

SCOTT SNYDER: 'Big Plans' For HAWKMAN
Scott Snyder Quote: "We have big plans for him. He's a character that I've had designs on for a long time, since I started thinking about this story. There was even a point where I thought about writing him after Batman. Then with all the stuff we were planning, it didn't quite work out. But in terms of the DNA of what we're doing for that character and the stories that are going to spin out of it for him, I couldn't be more excited in the directions that the people who are going to work on him are taking. They're better than anything that I could have done. It's really impressive." Click for Article!

DARK DAYS: THE CASTING #1 REVIEW
Dark Days: The Casting No. 1 Review
by Kevin Lainez of Comic Book Revolution
"Seeing how both Hawkman and Hawkwoman have been leading an organization known as “The Immortals” that includes the likes of Ra’s Al Ghul added to what Batman is doing. This fact instantly creates interesting in the role of Hawkman and Hawkwoman, two characters that I’ve never been interested in. Snyder clearing up a lot of the confusion that surrounds both characters has been a big plus in giving the characters some momentum. Their role in all of this is still a mystery as they seem to be on the opposite side of the same board that Batman is playing on."
