On April 25, 1941, an iconic character was created by legendary writer Gardner Fox. Shiera Sanders started out as Hawkman/Carter Hall's love interest and supporting character, but that's not how the story ended. Eighteen months after Shiera's first appearance in Flash Comics No. 1 in November 1939, she put on the Hawk costume for the first time to help Hawkman trick some criminals. That was the small beginning, but it gradually became something much, much bigger. Over the years, Hawkgirl has evolved from a "sidekick" to Hawkman's equal, and even superior in many cases. Thanks to her appearances on TV cartoons and in the movies, her popularity may even be greater than Hawkman's. That's a testament to her rich history, her many interpretations over the years, and a fascination that many writers, artists, creators, and directors have had with a superheroine with beautiful wings, a wicked mace, a bad-ass attitude that doesn't fool around, and an ability to step out of Hawkman's shadow and become her own character.

Shiera Saunders first appeared in Flash Comics No. 1. She was only imitating Hawkman, but she gradually made the suit her own and went on many adventures with Hawkman during the Golden Age. When she appeared again on December 29, 1960, in The Brave and the Bold No. 34 during the Silver Age of Comics, she was Hawkman's equal, his partner, and his wife. She would go on to earn membership in the Justice League of America. Later, during the Modern age of comics, she was given one of the most tragic background stories in all of comics, which made her a complete badass who punched first and asked questions later. Kendra Saunders arrived on the scene in 1999, and things have never been the same since.
In mainstream entertainment, Shayera Hol (voiced by Maria Canals-Barrera) was a main character in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon series in the early 2000s. Ciara Renee became the first live-action version of Hawkgirl on DC's Legends of Tomorrow TV show in 2015. Isabela Merced is currently portraying Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders in the DCU's Superman movies. Her popularity has continued to grow over the years with these appearances

Hawkgirl has been through many changes over the years, but the fact that she's still around after 86 years is a testament to the character and her limitless potential as a force in comic book storytelling. Her creator, Gardner Fox, may not have imagined this at the beginning, but he quickly saw the possibilities of Hawkgirl as the justice-seeking partner of Hawkman and began her journey, which developed into the iconic hero that we have today.
