Remembering Katar Hol of Hawkworld

By Tim Board
With the big reveal of Katar Hol at the end of Hawkman No. 3 (released Aug. 8) and the possibility of a battle between Hol and Carter Hall in Hawkman No. 4 (out on Sept 12), Hawkfans are eagerly looking forward to the issue. At the end of the last issue, Carter Hall was transported to Thanagar and found himself standing on the shoulder of the Kalmoran statue and Katar Hol telling him he was under arrest. There's no telling what kind of battle is going to happen in the skies over Thanagar! But before we get there, let's take a look back at the character of Katar Hol and remember who he was.

November 10th is Hawkman Day!

By Tim Board, Hawkworld

Lately, DC Comics has been designating specific dates on the calendar to celebrate their iconic heroes. June 12 has been officially declared Superman Day by DC Comics. Batman has been given September 15, while Wonder Woman Day is on June 3rd. DC Comics recently had many iconic heroes pass the 75-year mark, and it was a great idea to designate a day to celebrate the heroes' creators, writers, artists, and comics over the years. Fans joined in the celebration by sharing their favorite comic, art, story, TV appearance or movie. It was also a good opportunity for DC to put out something special for the fans of the characters.

All About That Mace: A History of Hawkman and Hawkgirl's Iconic Weapon

Art by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez

When superhero fans think of a superhero, they often think of the weapons as much as the heroes themselves. Heroes such as Thor (Mjolnir hammer), Wonder Woman (magic lasso), Captain America (shield), and Batman (batarang) are some of the most well-known weapons. When a fan thinks of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, the mace is often mentioned. During their long history, they have been associated with many weapons and gadgets. During the Golden Age, Hawkman often used a wooden quarterstaff. During Hawkworld, the Katar became one of his main weapons. During the 80s, the spear became one of Hawkgirl’s primary weapons. But there is no denying that the weapon most often associated with Hawkman and Hawkgirl is The Mace. Carter Hall’s mace recently had a prominent appearance in Scott Snyder’s Metal series, and a new version of The Mace has been featured in Robert Venditti’s Hawkman series. Let’s take a look at the Mace and see how it has been used over the 79-year history of Hawkman.
