Bird’s Eye View

Note: This is a Hawkman review, so the main Batman story is not covered here. I'm sure you can easily find three dozen sites that review his story.
Hawkman is asked by Midway Police Commissioner George Emmett to find out who is stealing artifacts from the Bleakhill Manor museum. Only the fake duplicates of weapons displayed have been taken, leaving the valuable art behind. Katar quickly discovers that the rare pieces of art have been replaced with forgeries as well. Katar uses his knowledge of history and weapons to figure out the thief's next move and waits for him when the thief uses a secret passage in the manor to sneak in. In a quick fight, the thief uses an Egyptian boomerang to knock Hawkman out and escapes. After coming to, and with the help of Socrates the owl, Hawkman tracks the thief down again. Hawkman is ready this time and quickly captures the thief.

Bird’s Eye View

This issue picks up seven months after the end of the Hawkworld series. Katar and Shayera were fugitives from both Thanagar and the U.S. During the final battle, Shayera was assumed to have been killed, and Katar was injured or dead. A few months passed, and another hero who calls himself Hawkman appears. He has a new costume and Wolverine-like claws. He's talking to animal spirits and the wind and has a pet wolf. He breaks up a robbery,  yanks the earring off a thief, and is later seen wearing it. Everyone is talking about the new Hawkman and wondering if it is Carter Hall, Katar Hol, or someone else. A hired hitman named Deadline attacks the Netherworld (a downtown slum area that is home to metahumans) to draw Hawkman out. The new Hawkman is working as a busboy in a run-down diner and flies off to face the hitman after hearing the news on TV. He easily defeats Deadline and finds out who is after him. The Justice League is also concerned about who this Hawkman is, so they send Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) to get some answers.

 BIRD'S EYE VIEW

Flash (Jay Garrick) traveled back to ancient Egypt and was told that Hawkman is returning. Meanwhile, JSA member Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders) had been remembering things from a past that wasn't hers. The angel Zauriel shocked her by revealing to her that the spirit of Shiera Saunders now dwelled within her. Shortly after, she was transported to Thanagar. The priests of Thanagar brought her there to help them bring Hawkman back from the realm he was banished to so many years ago (Hawkman Vol. 3 No. 32). When she reached into the Well of Spirits, Hawkman (Carter Hall) was able to find his way back home.
