Have a Question about Hawkman or Hawkgirl?

Have a question about Hawkman or Hawkgirl?
Ask me anything about Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Hawkwoman, or anything else related to Hawkworld! I’ll do my best to answer and post the question and answer here on Hawkworld.org!

jgarmann99: Hi, the Johns run is about to be omnibussed (is that a word?),is that a good starting point? Thanks.
The Geoff Johns run has been released several times in different formats over the years. Not sure why they are doing it yet again. The best starting point is Robert Venditti's Hawkman series. It's in 28 issues or 4 trades. Here's a list of all the trades and ominbuses with all the contents listed.
Jet-Let4606: Whats your favourite Hawk story? Do you prefer the alien warriors or the reincarnation origins? Do you like where the franchise is currently?
I have many favorite stories; Hawkworld Vol. 1 (1989), Legend of the Hawkman (2000), The Return of Hawkman (JSA No. 23-25, 2001), and the entirety of Hawkman Vol. V (201802021).
I have no favorite version, but I wouldn't mind seeing the current Carter Hall set up his base onThanagar. Best of both worlds.
I love where Venditti left Hawkman and Hawkwoman back together in Hawkman Vol. V. And with Kendra far, far away. Currently, for reasons unknown, Carter is back with Kendra as members of the Justice Society and Hawkwoman on her own at Thanagar. I hope they put Hawkman and Hawkwoman back together soon.

 More questions and answers below!

Informal_Database327: How does one go about picking up a hawkgirl?
Go to any toy store and you should be able to pick up an awesome Hawkgirl figure for around 30 bucks.
Largo23307 (Reddit): Divulge unto me everything you know of Nth metal. They are the most prolific users of the metal outside the Legion in the future.
Too much to list everything here. I collected everything I've known about the Nth metal in an article for my Hawkworld blog a few years ago. The Legion's flight rings is also mentioned.
LumosTheromax (Reddit): Batman considered hawkman to be one of the greatest tanks on the league during the 2000’s and always prefers to have a hawk on the league. If you were Batman arguing for why hawkman should be on the league next to the original 7, what’s your best argument to get him on board over other heavyweight leaguers?
The Justice League has plenty of heavy hitters, and Hawkman can be one of them if he wants to be, but the knowledge and expertise that Hawkman would bring to the team would be second to none. He is the "living document of the universe." He's lived (and died) longer than any member (even Wonder Woman) and his knowledge is vast. He has forgotten more than Batman will ever learn. He is more than a Geoff Johns blood-lust battle tank.

KidZoki (Reddit): Worst Hawkman writer? Series? (Don't hold back...)
I wouldn't say worst writer, but I didn't really like the last two-thirds of Hawkman Vol. 3 by William Messner-Loebs. The whole set-up in Chicago was kind of a mess and the supporting characters were forgettable. The worst part was how Hawkwoman (Shayera Thal) was written out of the series. The series lost its soul when that happened.
For Hawkgirl, it is the recent Hawkgirl Vol. 2. Absolute mess and I'm embarrassed to say I bought all six issues. The curse of being a completist.

Salt_Use7122 (Reddit): Which incarnation of the characters is your favorite? My personal favorites are the Hawkworld versions written by Tim Truman! I loved Katar's evolution from drug addicted and ignorant aristocrat to a noble hero. I also loved Shayera Thal. I think Venditti's Shayera was a good progression from that version of the character.
For Hawkman, it's a tossup between the early Silver Age Katar Hol I (1960s) by Gardner Fox and Hawkman Vol. V Carter Hall III (2018-2021) by Robert Venditti. He is not a rage-beast, but thoughtful and uses his knowledge well. Always expanding on his abilities. And his relationship with Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman is rock solid.
For Hawkgirl, it would be Hawkworld's Shayera Thal and Hawkman Vol. V's Shayera Hol II, Shayera from Hawkworld was an absolute badass and Venditti brought her back really well in the latest Hawkman series. Fierce warrior, doesn't hold back, probably one of the best combat fighters in the DCU. I want to see more of her.

Monica Doe (Facebook): Who is Naomi?Wow. I'd like to know more about the Cherokee heritage of Katar.
Naomi was a Cherokee Indian. She worked as a translator for Carter and Shiera Hall. Through the Halls, she met Perry Carter, who was actually a Thanagarian named Paran Katar. They fell in love and he took her back to Thanagar. But the Thanagarian society was a nightmare for Naomi. She became pregnant and gave birth to Katar. She fought against raising him on Thanagar so Paran took the child away from her and sent her back to earth alone. She became a medicine woman called Faraway Woman among her people. Many years passed and when Katar was badly injured in a battle, Carter Hall brought him to Naomi and they were reunited. They remained together until Katar was sent into the Hawk Realm and essentially "died." We have not seen her since.
sandmansuperman (Reddit): Are Hawkgirl and Hawkwoman two incarnations of Chay-Ara who just happen to exist at the same time, or is one of them from a different time?
The current Hawkwoman (Shayera Hol) and Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders) are both reincarnated from Shiera Saunders-Hall. You can find the full story here
Stefan Carl Magri (Facebook): Which of Hawkman's villains should be considered his archenemy?
In Hawkman's long history, three standout over the other in my opinion; Hath-Set, the Gentleman Ghost, and Shadow Thief. Hath-set was of course in Hawkman's origin story. The Gentleman Ghost appeared towards the end of the Golden Age. Shadow Thief appeared towards the beginning of the Silver Age. All three have had some great stories and battles with Hawkman and Hawkgirl. For me, The Gentleman Ghost is to Hawkman as what Lex Luthor is to Superman, what the Joker is to Batman, and what Sinestro is to Green Lantern. His ultimate and most terrifying arch enemy.

randy-justice (Reddit): Why does DC ever write the golden age Hawks? They have Jay Garrick in continuity.
(I'm assuming he meant "never.") Because the Golden Age Hawkman died before or after Rebirth (depending on the timeline) and was reincarnated as the current Hawkman (Carter Hall III). You can read the full history of the Golden Age Hawkman here.

Pacman8myghosts (Reddit): Other than The Atom, who is Hawkman's best friend on the JL? Best one appearance villain?

Hawkman had a good relationship with Adam strange over the years. He also had a close connection to Barry Allan. Hawkman has a very interesting and large group of villains that have appeared over the years. There are many villains with only one appearance, but right off the top of my head I thought of St. Bastion from the Savage Hawkman series, and also Count Viper from the Hawkman Vol. 3 series. He would be more of a villain who appeared in a story series instead of just one issue. The Purple Pilgrim and the Headhunter from Hawkman vol. 4 were all so cool. There are many.

Background_Bill_8762 (Reddit): I just read HAWKWORLD series again. It may be my all time favorite series in comics. What do you think?

The first series by Tim Truman and parts of Vol. 2 were really good. Especially Vol. 1. One of the best Hawkman series ever. They really had a great chance to restart Hawkman in an amazing way and kinda fumbled the ball by making it in the current timeline.

Interest-Lumpy (Redditt): Do you think the Hawks will receive another retcon to their origin in the next 10 yrs or so?

Robert Vendetti, the writer of the last Hawkman series, set up the origin and history of Hawkman beautifully. It would be my hope that DC Comics sticks to this origin and builds on what Vendetti started. However, this is DC Comics that we're talking about so I'm not optimistic. It's been almost 5 years since the last Hawkman series and as far as I can tell, the origin still stands. We'll see what happens if they ever announce a new Hawkman series.

PinkyKong2 (Reddit): Hawkgirls's mace. Anything special about it?

Hawkman and Hawkgirl basically have the same mace, which is made of Nth metal. It is super heavy so not just anyone can walk over and pick it up. It has been shown to repel magic and supernatural beings. In the recent Hawkman series, Hawkman was shown to control the mace with his mind. I don't believe Hawkgirl has shown that ability yet, but she should be able to. In some of the recent comics and even in the Black Adam movie, they have shown the ability to change the shape of the weapon from a mace into an ax or other weapons. There is an article on the mace on my hawkworld.org blog if you want to check it out.

Galaxy EyesRuler (Reddit): Are carter and kendra strenght and durability different from a normal Human or does their power just come from the Nth metal equipment?

Carter and Kendra are completely different at this point. Kendra has become something similar to the Savage Hawkman. The wings are organic and the Nth metal appears to be in her. Carter has Nth metal equipment, and I believe that since he has been using Nth metal for so long, the Nth metal is in his system. And he has a psychic or telepathic connection to it. But their powers are very different now.

RealVast 4063 (Reddit): What do you think about the DC Finest: Hawkman - Wings Across Time collection coming in August? I’m still hoping for a Hawkworld collection at some point.

DC Comics leeps releasing the same stuff. The contents of this book are already collected and out there if you look for it. They are also releasing Geoff Johns' Hawkman Vol. 4 series. Again. There are so many other Hawkman series now collected yet. The Shadow War of Hawkman, Hawkman Vol. 2, Hawkworld Vol. 2, a few issues in the middle of Hawkman Vol. 4, etc.

AzulMage2020 (Reddit): Is the best iteration of Thangar and Thanagarians in general Grants Morrisons take from Animal Man? I'll beat you to it: YES. Yes it is.

Except for those outfits. GAWD.

InfiniteDedekindCuts (Reddit): What's the best animated or live-action adaptation of hawkman and/or hawkgirl in your opinion?

Animated: Superman Batman Public Enemies. The scene where Hawkman and Captain Marvel go up against Superman and Batman was awesome.
Live-action. I would have to say Black Adam because it showed so much of Hawkman; his mansion, his ship, his powers, etc. I wish we could have seen more. TV would be Michael Shanks Hawkman from Smallville.

Debra Fox (Facebook):  How many hawkmen are there ? I understand earth I and 2 and post crisis earth but now ? I have no clue.

There are six main ones. Carter Hall I, Katar Hol I, Katar Hol II, Carter Hall II, Katar Hol III, and the current version Carter Hall III. Here's my article on their histories.
