Board Review of JSA #13

The Ragnarok story was finally completed and from this issue, we are jumping back to the 1940s and the beginning of the Justice Society. Hawkman/Carter Hall was a charter member but from the looks of it, Hawkgirl/Shiera Saunders-Hall will be fully involved as well.

Spoilers ahead so if you haven't read the issue yet, please go check it out first!

In this issue, Carter and Shiera are in Peru and trying to find the Temple of  the Feitherans. The Feitherans are a bird-like people who first appeared in Flash Comics No. 71 (May 1946). Carter and Shiera discovered them in a region of Greenland and this is where they met Norda Cantrell, the son of a human father and a Feitheran mother. Norda would eventually become the Halls' godson and join the Infinity, Inc. as the superhero called Northwind.

Carter Hall is desperately seeking the temple but we are not exactly sure why. He has a map that he got from Kent Nelson, a rival archaeologist and the hero Doctor Fate. Just as they arrive at their camp near the border of Peru and Equador, Carter is shot with a arrow by Sportsmaster. Shiera changes into Hawkgirl and goes after him but flies into a trap and is captured by an unknown woman. This woman appears to know about their reincarnation. Could it be Hath-Set in female form?

The other JSA members are also in their own stories; Green Lantern, Flash with Johnny Thunder, Hourman and Sandman, and the Atom. The Spectre and Doctor Fate have yet to appear. Although at the end of the last issue, Kid Eternity was taken over by the Spectre in present time and that may have some kind of bearing on this story in the past.

It's refreshing to see Carter and Shiera together, and no Kendra. The it's-not-my-destiny, I-don't-love-you, soap opera is tired and it's nice to see Hawkman and Hawkgirl in love and embracing their destiny as partners and heroes. This is how Hawkman and Hawkgirl work the best. I am looking forward to seeing how Jeff Lemire brings the JSA members together and where he takes Carter and Shiera from here.
