Hawkman's Super Spaceship: The Soarship

Every superhero has a lair of some sort. Superman has his Fortress of Solitude. Batman has his Batcave. Hawkman has his lair as well. It's never really been acknowledged, but it's been there since the beginning of the Silver Age. In the most recent Hawkman series, Hawkman Vol. V (2018-2021), Rovert Venditti brought back Hawkman's spaceship and made it into such a lair that even Batman would envy.

Ever since Hawkman entered the Silver Age as a Thanagarian, he has had a spaceship in many of his stories. These spaceships have played an important role in many of his stories. Some lasted for years, while others only showed up briefly. Before we get into the main topic, here's a quick rundown of the spaceships that Hawkman has used in the past.

Thanagarian Star Cruiser

This spaceship first appeared in the Brave and the Bold #34 back in 1961 and it lasted all the way through the Silver and Bronze Ages. It maybe the most recognizable of Hawkman's ships. It kept all of Hawkman's Thanagarian weapons and devices, such as the Absorbascon and the Duplicator. When Katar and Shayera were on Earth, they kept it in orbit and hid it with a cloaking device.

Thanagarian Command Ship

This was the ship that Katar and Shayera used to fly back and forth between Earth and Thanagar during the Hawkworld series (1990-1993). Even in warp drive, the journey took about a month so they spent a lot of their time on the ship in artificial hibernation. We stopped seeing it after they became fugitives of Thanagar.

Sirius

The ship appeared only for a couple of issues during the Hawkworld run but it was extremely cool so I had to add it. The bulk of the ship remained in hyperspace, while the command module remained in this space, so it was much larger than it looked from the outside. It had a computer so complex that the Thanagarians made it sentient, so it had its own will. It helped Katar and the fugitives of Thanagar escape to Earth. What took an average spaceship about a month, this ship arrived at Earth in just five minutes. The Thanagarian government demanded the return of the fugitives, so Katar asked Sirius to take the other fugitives and find a homeworld for them, far away from Earth or Thanagar. It was a shame, because that ship was really awesome.

Brontadon

In the Hawkman Vol 4 era (2002-2006), Hawkman returned from the Hawk realm and it was revealed that the past Hawkman had kept a Thanagarian ship stored away. Hawkman was the pilot and the past Hawkgirl was an expert mechanic who could fix pretty much anything on the ship. Kendra Saunders at first had no idea what to do, but then her memories kicked in and the ship was ready to go. The Brontadon was a pretty awesome ship and we saw it in action from time to time. Great design, too.

During the Hawkman Vol V series by Robert Venditti, a new ship was introduced and it is absolutely spectacular. I'm hoping that it makes another appearance again because it would be an awful waste of a brilliant design and idea. The following has a bunch of spoilers, so if you haven't read the series yet, please check it out first. It's one of the best Hawkman series ever and you won't be disappointed.

In the series, Hawkman (Carter Hall III) is following a trail of clues to find out about his past. It leads him to the Microverse where he runs into his best friend, Atom (Ray Palmer). It is revealed that Hawkman had a former life in the Microverse as a hero called Avion. He had hid something made of Nth metal so they go to retrieve it. After a huge battle with the sentient planet Moz-ga, Hawkman finds what he is looking for; a huge Nth metal ship.

From Hawkman Vol. V No. 6 (January 2019)

The ship is absolutely astounding in what it can do and what it has onboard. It is a ship with an Nth metal reactor core. It is equipped with a Zeta Beam Drive for instant transportation. Since it was found in the Microverse, it has shrinking powers similar to the Atom's powers. It houses Hawkman's museum of his past costumes, weapons, a library, documents detailing his past lives, and much more. Hawkman built it himself and hid it in the Microverse so that he could go back to it when the Deathbringers came after him.

The series gave us a few good looks of Hawkwoman's (Shayera Hol II) Thanagarian Cruiser as well.

Here is a shot of the ships next to each other. You can see how much larger the Soarship is compared to the Thanagarian cruiser.

Hawkman hasn't had his own series for five years now. He is currently in the JSA series (on and off), but there is no sign of his ship. It would be a extreme waste if future DC Comics writers completely ignored this amazing vehicle that Venditti created for Hawkman. Let's hope we get to see it again soon.

  1. You should add the Black Adam movie's look at the ship!

    1. I thought about it, but that movie and the way the DECU ended just when it came out still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. A huge disappointment and we will probably never see it again.
