When you think about it, Hawkman is a terrifying presence. A 6'6 man wearing a hawk mask, huge wings, a harness across a bare chest, and a huge mace with blood stains. It's Michael Myers, Jeepers Creepers, and Silent Hill's Pyramid Head rolled in one.
Hawkman was doing "two-week" prep decades before Batman was walking down dark alleys with his parents.

I think Hawkman and Green Arrow actually enjoy spending time together. When they step out of the JLA Transporter, I'm pretty sure they're looking around to see if the other is there or not.

It's never really brought up. But Hawkman and Hawkwoman's spaceship has a Klingon-style cloaking device. It's just sitting up there in orbit with some of the greatest treasures and weapons in the universe. Why writers don't use this more is beyond me.

It's rarely ever brought up, but Hawkgirl is one of DC's first female heroes. She was flying around before Wonder Woman ever showed up.

Hawkgirl/Hawk woman is one of the most prolific fighters with a spear. Not only does Nth metal give her super strength, but she also has the ability to see miles ahead. When she throws that spear, she ain't missing. If she ever gets her own movie, I want a super spear fight for her.
Sometimes I think that the abilities of Nth metal are so off the charts, the writers don't know what to do with the Hawks. It negates gravity, gives super strength and healing, repels magic, disrupts power beam constructs, forms instantly into various weapons, and is almost unbreakable.

When I see Hawkman and Hawkgirl, I don't see a " confusing and convoluted" history. I see a hero with many pieces, like a jigsaw puzzle. Waiting to be put together.
Hawkman is like Shrek. He has layers, like an onion. There are many layers, but it's all the same vegetable.
