There's a site called comicbook.com which puts out pretty good articles at times about comics and anything related. I'm sure anyone who reads up on comics news has gone to the site many times. Another article involving Hawkman popped up today so I thought I'd share it because I'm thoroughly confused by what the intent was.
The article is titled "10 Most Important DC Characters Who Aren’t Superman, Batman Or Wonder Woman" and sure enough, Hawkman comes in on the list at No. 10. "Oh, cool!," I thought. Nice to get some recognition! But then I started reading.
"Hawkman has always been known as a kind of joke character in pop culture, being one of the guys people insult to poke fun at some of the sillier aspects of superhero comics. He’s been the butt of the joke for DC fans a lot, too, but he only reached that level because of how popular and necessary he is.
For a long time, his origin was very messy and contradictory..."
Seven Hells. The writer does list some reasons why Hawkman should be on the list later on, but after that intro, who would want him? I'm not listing the writer's name so feel free to go to the site if you want to know (it'll give them some clicks), but ..again, Seven Hells. If you're trying to convince people that Hawkman is an important character, this ain't gonna work.
This is why we can't have nice things.
You may ask, "Why is Hawkman one of the most important characters in the DC Universe?"
I never thought you'd ask.
He has links with many other heroes through his reincarnation. (Superman, Supergirl, Doctor Fate, Wonder Woman, Black Adam)
Hawkman's Nth Metal is one of the most important elements in the DC Universe.
He came into existence long before even Wonder Woman came around.
He was a charter member of the Justice Society and served as it's chairman for over eight years during the Golden Age.
He is a bridge between Earth and Thanagar, one of the principal planets in the DC Universe.
His love and partnership with Shayera Hol/Hawkwoman is the longest and strongest relationship in DC history.
His knowledge of the history of the universe is vast.
His friendship with Ray Palmer/The Atom is one of the most endearing and strongest friendships in comics.
His knowledge of weapons, combat styles, and spaceships have barely been explored.
His character and the Nth metal makes him one the toughest superheroes in the DC universe
If you want to read up more on Hawkman, Hawkwoman, and Hawkgirl, there are over 500 posts on this site to give you and idea. Enjoy!
Love this ! You're another believer!
