New Hawkman Writer: Robert Venditti

“Hawkman is a foundational character in the DCU. Over time I think he’s lost some of that central importance to the DC universe, and we really want to bring that back and make him a marquee character. And to do that, we’re going to take him to a lot of unexpected, unexplored places and introduce a lot of new mythology for the character.”

On March 15th, Hawkfans found out from David Betancourt's Washington Post article that Robert Venditti is going to be writing the new Hawkman series starting on June 13th. Excitement is high in Hawkworld, with both polls on Hawkworld's Facebook and Twitter groups showing a 90% approval of the choice. Even though Venditti has been on the front lines of DC for the past few years, some fans are asking the question, "Is Venditti a good match for Hawkman?"

April 25th is Hawkgirl Day!

Art by Jim Lee
Seventy-seven years ago. on April 25, 1941, Shiera Sanders flew for the first time as Hawkgirl, beginning a long career. She was considered a sort of sidekick for Hawkman at first, but over the years she has taken her own place as a popular character in the comics and on the TV cartoon shows, and she is now one of the most recognizable heroines in comics today. From Shiera Saunders to Shayera Thal to Kendra Saunders, Hawkgirl has left her mark in DC Comics no matter which identity she has been given. Kendra Saunders made a big comeback in the recent Metal series by Scott Snyder and will be taking her rightful place in the new Justice League comic starting on June 6th.
Shiera Sanders made her debut on November 10, 1939 along with Carter Hall.Hawkman in Flash Comics No. 1 (cover date January 1940), but she did not appear as Hawkgirl until All-Star Comics No. 5 (cover date June 1941). We celebrate April 25th as her anniversary since that is the official release date of the comic.
There are lots of exciting times ahead for Hawkgirl fans as she flies high in the Justice League and will eventually appear in the new Hawkman series as well. It's a great time to be a Hawkgirl fan!

Thoughts on the Continuity of Hawkman and What's Ahead

The continuity of Hawkman has always been an issue when discussing the character. There's no denying that Hawkman and Hawkgirl's story is confusing, whether you're a new fan or a veteran. When DC Comics announced the new series with Robert Venditti and Bryan Hitch, most Hawkfans immediately started speculating. Which Hawkman will be used? How will it fit in Hawkman's history? Will this mess things up even more? There are many questions as we get closer and closer to the June 13th release date.

Roberto Villagran 's Painting of Richard Howell's Hawkman and Hawkwoman

We are extremely honored to have Richard Howell as a member of our Facebook group. Not only that, but he often very generously shares some of his past work with us. Needless to say, it is an extreme thrill to be able to talk about the comic during that time and to see Richard's amazing work. Today, Richard shared with us a commission painted by Ricardo Villagran. It is based on the art by Richard Howell (pencils) and Alfredo Alcala (ink) from The Shadow War of Hawkman No. 2. Absolutely stunning work!
