Some articles have been complete put-downs of the Winged Warrior, while every once in a while they'll put out something half decent. If there is a couple that fits this song, it's Carter and Shiera. I made this about a year ago. 

Hawkman Learns the Language of the Birds (Flash Comics No. 23)

One of my favorite stories from the Golden Age is Flash Comics No. 23 by Gardner Fox and Sheldon Moldoff. In this issue, Hawkman is rescued by an old hawk named One Eye. The hawk takes Hawkman to the "secret nesting place of the hawks", and while recuperating, he learns the language of the birds. During the final battle, One Eye sacrifices himself to save Hawkman. At the end of the story, the hawks elect Hawkman as their new "chieftain". 
It amazes me how much story Gardner Fox could tell in just nine pages!
