Sometimes I'm not sure if Comic Book Resources despises Hawkman or likes him. Some articles have been complete put-downs of the Winged Warrior, while every once in a while they'll put out something half decent. Here's a list of 15 things that most Hawkman fans already know, but might come to a surprise to the casual Hawkman follower. Hawkman Learns the Language of the Birds (Flash Comics No. 23)

One of my favorite stories from the Golden Age is Flash Comics No. 23 by Gardner Fox and Sheldon Moldoff. In this issue, Hawkman is rescued by an old hawk named One Eye. The hawk takes Hawkman to the "secret nesting place of the hawks", and while recuperating, he learns the language of the birds. During the final battle, One Eye sacrifices himself to save Hawkman. At the end of the story, the hawks elect Hawkman as their new "chieftain". 
It amazes me how much story Gardner Fox could tell in just nine pages!

Sometime in the mid-20th Century, Hawkman and Hawkgirl were so obsessed by the strange Nth Metal and the stories they've been told that they formed a team of scientists and adventurers to study it all. Included in the group was the Blackhawks, the Challengers of the Unknown, Red Tornado, and the Metal Men.Hawkman operated from Blackhawk Island, a place in a hidden pocket from space-time. It took him decades to build the technology needed, but he and his friends eventually were ready to send a team to the "other side" by utilizing Nth Metal.
