The List of Hawkworld Comics 1939-2020

I've put together a list of comics that Hawkman and Hawkwoman have appeared in since 1939. I have listed the regular series, mini-series, back-up features, one-shots, tie-ins, guest appearances and the issues from other characters' or teams' series that are important in their histories. I also added some notes that are important in their history. It's a work in progress, but maybe this will help Hawkman, Hawkwoman, and Hawkgirl fans navigate through the world of Hawkworld comics. Enjoy!

Note: Not all of the team issues are listed here. I tried to look back and list just the significant moments in the teams' (Justice Society, Justice League, All-Star Squadron) issues. If there are some moments that you think should be added, please comment below!

Update: I just added a separate page for the trade paperbacks, collections, omnibuses, etc. Go to the bottom of the page and click the tab!

Board Review of Hawkman No. 23: Miasma of Fear

It was a long wait, 55 days to be exact, but Hawkman No. 23 was finally released. We were left in suspense about the story about a "Plague Doctor" in the 17th century Europe coming out while the world is fighting a pandemic in real-time. It was uncanny, to say the least, but writer Robert Venditti had the idea for the story back in October. And it leads right into a moment we've been wanting for a long time.

The Greatest Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman Stories

By Tim Board

Art by Ed Coutts
On April 25, 1941, in All-Star Comics No. 5, Shiera Sanders became Hawkgirl for the first time, and so began the story of one of the most famous and recognizable characters in the history of DC Comics. Hawkgirl may have been a sort of sidekick to Hawkman in the beginning, but she is no man's sidekick now. She is one of the most interesting and powerful characters in comics, with her own set of powers, abilities, and history. I could have gone into her history to celebrate Hawkgirl Day 2020, but this year I thought I would list my favorite Hawkgirl stories. I'm sure every Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman fan has their own favorites, so my apologies in advance if they aren't on the list. I also tried to do a countdown of best stories, but that proved to be difficult since I like them equally. So here are my favorite Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman stories in chronological order. Let us know which is your favorite in the comments!

Board Review of Hawkman No. 22: Death's Doorway: From End to Beginning

Hawkman 22 Cover by Mikel Janin
Intense! There have been many Hawkman comics over the years that made me hold my breath as I read them. The Hawkworld series by Tim Truman and the Return of Hawkman in the JSA series by Geoff Johns come to mind. This issue was at that level. It was an intense story with the Sky Tyrant story seemingly approaching the climax.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 21: Death's Doorway Part Two: The Key

Great Polaris! That was fun! Hawkman No. 21 continues the Sky Tyrant saga and this issue was a blast. At the end of the last issue, we were on an unnamed planet where a key is locked away and guarded by a huge, we’re talking gargantuan, guardian of the grave of one of Hawkman’s former lives called the Titan Hawk. Sky Tyrant wants this key to unlock a weapon that will cause widespread death across the universe and ensure that his reincarnating will continue forever.

Tim Board Highlights of Four Years of Hawkworld!

Four years of Hawkworld! On Wednesday, January 15th, it will be four years since I decided to start a Hawkman group. In 4 years, it's expanded to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and a blog. It's been an amazing 4 years! There have been many things that I never dreamed would happen when I started. This is a purely personal list, but here are the top moments for me since I started Hawkworld.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 20: Death's Doorway Part One: Passengers

Cover by Pat Olliffe, Tom Palmer, Jeremiah Skipper
The Sky Tyrant saga has become a battle between a Deathbringer and a Lifebringer. Ever since he accepted the “gift” of reincarnation, Hawkman’s mission has been to save lives, to save as many people as he took as the general of Lord of the Void’s Deathbringers. Once he completes that task, his next death will be his last. You could say that he has become a Lifebringer. Meanwhile, the Sky Tyrant is from Earth-3, where everything is backward, so when Hawkman was reincarnated on Earth-3, he was born evil. He was a Deathbringer again. As we saw in Hawkman No. 18, he was killed by a group of heroes led by Shadow Sheriff. But ever since then, he has been in the consciousness of the other Hawkmen who came after him, watching them save lives and bring their lives to an end, including Sky Tyrant. When the Batman Who Laughs infected Hawkman, Sky Tyrant took the opportunity to take over again, vowing to take as many lives as he can and live forever.

Top Twelve Hawkworld Moments of the 2010s!

As we come to the close of the decade, it's time to look back on the past ten years and look at the best moments of the 2010s for Hawkworld. It was a turbulent decade, to say the least (when is it not?), but there is some comfort in the fact that we find Hawkman and Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman in a fairly good place as we head into the 20s. I looked back over the last ten years and made a list of the top twelve moments of the decade for the Hawks. I'll do a countdown, saving No. 1 for last.

Why wasn't Shayera Hol arrested?!

From Justice League No. 16 (March 2019)
After the events of Justice League No. 14-16, some fans have wondered why Shayera Hol, the current ruler of Thanagar Prime, was not arrested by the Green Lantern Corps and was allowed to continue her rule. In the Justice League issues, we were introduced to a Shayera Hol who had moved her people from the destroyed Thanagar to Thanagar Prime.

Board Review of Hawkman No. 19: "Tyrant Reborn: Better Half"

Ever since we found out back in October that Hawkwoman was coming to the Hawkman series, many Hawkfans have been looking forward to this one. Since the series began a year and a half ago, we have been wondering how Hawkman would finally meet Hawkwoman. And as Carter Hall says, "Not like this."

Explaining Hawkman, Hawkwoman, and Hawkgirl (December 1, 2019 Update)

Here is my December 1, 2019 attempt at explaining the current Carter Hall, Shayera Hol, and Kendra Saunders. The situation continues to change and we find out something more almost every issue. I've tried to piece everything that we have so far to see how the current Hawks are connected. Feel free to ask questions or debunk my theories in the comments below!

Hawkman 80th Celebration: The Best Comic Book Series

Hawkman first appeared in the comics on November 10, 1939, in Flash Comics No. 1. Since then, Hawkman has been featured in eight regular series and several mini-series, back-up features and one-off issues. The Winged Wonder has been written and drawn by many of the greatest writers and artists in comics since the very beginning. Whenever I'm asked to come on a podcast or YouTube video, I'm always asked which series is my favorite. This question is always a tough one because it's impossible to choose just one. As comic book fans, we all have those issues that stay with us through the years. It can be for any reason; the writing, the art, or the characters. But when that special comic comes at a certain time in our lives, it stays with us and becomes a part of our own history. Comics have that kind of magic when it all comes together. As a Hawkfan, there are issues that stand out in my memory. There are series that I enjoyed more than others, and when I want to read my favorite hero again, I instinctively reach for those favorites. For this article, I've chosen the five series that have stayed with me and have remained my favorites over the years. In chronological order;

Fan Theory connecting the Current Hawkman and Shayera Hol to the Savage Hawkman

One of my favorite pastimes is to tie all of the continuities of Hawkman into one character. In the current Hawkman series, Robert Venditti has brilliantly put all of the past Hawkmen on one foundation. He has made an origin that explains all the Hawkmen and why Hawkman does what he does. It changes everything about Hawkman but also leaves everything that has happened in the past intact. However, a new challenge for fans came up when Shayera Hol and the Savage Hawkman showed up in Justice League No. 14-16 (February-March 2019).

Wanted: A Hawkman/Hawkwoman Comic!

Art by Stjepan Sejic (Hawkman) and Jim Lee (Hawkgirl)
Since last summer, Hawkman and Hawkgirl have been in some great comics. Hawkman has been in his own monthly series by Robert Venditti and Bryan Hitch. Hawkgirl has been a central figure in the bi-weekly Justice League series. Although the Hawkman series has been gradually dropping in sales (18k in March 2019), both series are getting great reviews. Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV are writing a new and interesting Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders, while Venditti has been reinventing the origin and character of Carter Hall.
